Screwed? Really? Rice? Really?

I mean, they were really lighting up the conference with those two winning seasons in 30 years. And certainly their losing overall record in both the WAC and CUSA shows they belonged in a major conference all along.

Yeah, I realized that was stupid after I said it. MWC only has 10 teams now, for whatever reason I thought this put them at 12. Figured they'd hold off on Boise until the Big XII collapsed and they picked a few of those teams up.

With Utah, BYU, TCU, and now Boise State the Mountain West is looking pretty legit. They now have 10 members and I look for them to begin pursuing some of the Big XII schools if and when that conference folds. Two schools have left now, so theoretically the remaining 10 schools could choose to remain as a 10 team conference or they could try to add some schools like Arkansas and TCu (although with Boise going to the MWC I think it will be more difficult to get TCU). I still think that the Big XII will fold though because Missouri is gone if the Big Ten says that they want them.

If we end up with the four rumored super conferences I could see the Mountain West adding some of the left over BCS schools and maybe adding Fresno State and Nevada to get to 16 teams to give us five super conferences.

Once the Big 12 implodes, the MWC should get an auto bid to the BCS. Especially if they snag some of the Big 12 North teams.

Yeah, if the Big XII does indeed disband after the 2011 season it will be really interesting to see what happens with the BCS. The have a contact with the six conferences and with ESPN for the next four years. It is possible that they could just have five automatic qualifying conferences for the last two years of the contract, give the Big XII's bid to the Mountain West (which is likely if they end up adding the left over Big XII teams), or they could issue The Big Ten and Pac-10 two bids each if they both have 16 teams. It's obvious though that if the conference implodes that there will be some serious renegotiation happening before the 2012 season.

With Utah looking bound for the PAC 10 now Boise's move is looking pretty lateral. Losing Utah is going to cost them a BCS bid. The MWC essentially traded Utah for Boise and will wind up in the same position they were in before. There are 3 criteria for inclusion in the BCS and a prospective conference must place in the top 6 in, average of the highest rated conference team, average computer rating of all schools, and an adjusted average of number of schools placed in the BCS top 25. The MWC meets the first and the third, but fall well short in the second. The bottom line is that the top 3 schools in the mountain west are worthy of BCS status, but the bottom 6 are worthy of the MAC. Swapping Boise for Utah isn't getting them any close to raising that conference wide computer ranking average and they will stay a non AQ conference.

Yeah Utah leaving the conference will certainly hurt them. Maybe they can add Houston or perhaps bank on the fact that SMU seems to be recovering and add them?

After Utah leaves, expand to twelve and add Fresno State, Houston, and Nevada. Houston's market is enormous, and adding Fresno State and Nevada allows them to really get into California's northern markets like San Fransisco/San Jose and Sacramento.

^^^I agree. I've been saying all along that if we ended up with four super conferences that I thought the Mountain West would add these same teams plus a few Big XII castoffs to become the fifth super conference. If Utah leaves for the Pac-10 then I think adding these three schools is the smart thing to do. With Boise already making the leap I think that it would be an easy decision for Fresno and Nevada because it would be better money. Houston would be a harder sell, but not too hard.

Man, that Western conference would be tough. I'd say TCU would runaway with that Eastern conference pretty much every year. I'd throw one of the stronger teams from the West over on their side

The MWC is still better than the WAC. Sure, it would have been better had Utah stayed, but it's still a decent move for Boise.

Not necessarily. It was much easier for them to go undefeated every year in the WAC than it will be in the Mountain West every year (even without Utah). The MWC wasn't going to get an auto-bid anyone unless they expanded more by adding the Big XII castoffs had the conference folded. Since they definitely aren't going to get an auto-bid now it probably was a bad idea because they would have been more likely to land in a BCS game more often in the WAC.

The difference may be that it might be more difficult to go undefeated. But, it could also put them in a better position IF they go undefeated. For example, Boise State was running behind TCU the majority of last season. Had it come down to only one spot between the two, Boise would've been left out. That could happen again. Now that Boise is in the MWC, if they go undefeated and so does say, Nevada out of the WAC, Boise State is getting the first bid hands down.

It was a mistake for Boise to move to the MWC. The revenue they get from their own media deals and from the WAC are essentially even with what the MWC distributes from the MTN. They move to a tougher conference that is not going to be a BCS conference barring any massive tectonic shifts in the world of college sports. They will be getting what exactly in return? They already had a built in store of credibility among fans and media types around the country so the move doesn't bolster that. They pretty much had the run of the WAC front offices and will have very little political capital in their new league offices in Colorado Springs. They will be fine in the long run, but they really jumped the gun on this. You at least wait to ensure that the conference you want to join at least has the same membership when you actually join it.
