Agreed. I don't see how it is so astounding that integrity would take a back seat to profit in the business world? Sports entertainment isn't the only business sector that operates as such.gorocks99 wrote: Their goal is to make money. If journalistic integrity was important to making money, Fox News Channel and MSNBC wouldn't have created the models they use today.

ESPN is good for one thing. Broadcasting sports. They are terrible at reporting on sports and they are terrible at cutting highlights of sports.

First of all the E in ESPN stands for Entertainment. They are the Entertainment Sports Programming Network. Not the News Sports Programming Network. Their primary concern is entertainment, not journalism. From the very beginning of the network they have tried to make their programming unique by not just showing highlights and giving scores, but by trying to be witty and entertaining while doing it. It's not like anything has happened in recent years to change that. If you hate SportsCenter now then you've probably never liked it.
Second, it sounds like most of you really just hate SportsCenter, not ESPN programming as a whole. Here's a suggestion, don't watch SportsCenter. Get your highlights and box scores from FSN or the internet. And if you really do hate ESPN as a whole and everything that they do, then don't watch their coverage of MLB, the NBA playoffs, college football, or Monday Night Football either.
Now I'm not saying that ESPN is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but no one is forcing you to watch it.

Anyone care to count all the spin-offs of ESPN? And don't people realize its a business? Care to guess how many $$$$$$ they are profiting each year? Somebody is watching.

Finally the answer I was waiting for. It's a pretty simple concept. Not sure why so many are having trouble grasping it.krambman wrote: First of all the E in ESPN stands for Entertainment. I hate Sportscenter, it's a joke. The anchors act like they're 12 while in reality they're about 50. The jokes, really? Hell, the NHL Network has better coverage than these clowns. I watch FSN's Final score for highlights, atleast they show every game going on.

mike and mike are awesome, cowherd has shock value but tells it like it is, svp and ryan rosillo(sp?), are great. gottlieb is a tool. pti is great. rome is burning sucks ass. around the horn is average. the best thing they could do is bring back eric kuselius at early evening. he is the best. never ever watch sportscenter because hockey and baseball dominate the highlights. it is an entertainment business, and they entertain.

There's nothing wrong with him having that personality on radio. Radio hosts are quite different from journalists... they have opinions just like their guests and callers. That works on radio, which is evident by his following. Radio would be AWFUL if it was just a robot setting there working the switchboard all day and offering no opinions.Mooney44Cards wrote:Bingo. I especially hate Scott Van Pelt. To me he epitomizes this ESPN attitude of "look at me, the anchor, trying to be witty and cool instead of what really went on in the game".............
Glad this dude called them out.
I agree that bringing it to Sportscenter is problematic, but it makes them money.

ESPN parades as something they're not. Been going downhill for the past 5-6 years steadily. The progression of the internet has made it worse by the year. But that can be said for many things, because sadly, people are more attracted to entertainment than information.

Which is exactly why you don't watch SportsCenter for information. They never cover all of the games and they show highlights of the more popular teams/players over winning teams because that is what the majority of their viewers want to see. If you want information pick up a newspaper, get on their website (or any sports website), or watch your local news for coverage of your local team. They are trying to provide an entertaining overview of some of the days top sports stories and news, that's all.SQ_Crazies wrote: ESPN parades as something they're not. Scott Van Pelt is just a straight douchebag, IMO. I love other hosts on ESPN Radio such as Mike and Mike, the Herd. SVP just strikes me as a fucktard. Just don't like his personality. Gottlieb is a douche also....ts1227 wrote:There's nothing wrong with him having that personality on radio. I don't hardly watch ESPN anymore, I will during football season because its the only option to see most games(FSN Big XII and Pac-10 games are putrid) and during baseball season I watch MLBNetwork. I'll probably watch ESPNU and their coverage of the Road to Omaha the next couple weeks, but again, its only because I have no other choice.
I don't think their reporting has been very good for a while now, and the on-air talent is taking a considerable nosedive

Please tell me you're joking. Hockey is rarely ever talked about on Sportscenter. I watch ESPNnews to get highlights instead.ZeroCool wrote: mike and mike are awesome, cowherd has shock value but tells it like it is, svp and ryan rosillo(sp?), are great. gottlieb is a tool. pti is great. rome is burning sucks ass. around the horn is average. the best thing they could do is bring back eric kuselius at early evening. he is the best. never ever watch sportscenter because hockey and baseball dominate the highlights. it is an entertainment business, and they entertain.
