I know there is a lot of hate for Wal-Mart, and some definitely deserved, but this is very cool of them. It doesn't seem like Wal-Mart gets very much press when they do stuff like this, though.

This is one of the stories in my magazine's Walmart e-newsletter today. Definitely a nice story.

This is another good thing they are doing

At the end of the day, people want to go where they can get the best value.

Interestingly Target seems to enjoy a better reputation, but is pretty comparable to Walmart in its ways (no unions for one).

I think the notion that these big box stores hurt communities is interesting too. For instance there's a push to create a Walmart in Chicago. Which many folks there want, but because the unions are so powerful it's kinda at a standstill. It would be created in one of the poorer neighborhoods, which means more jobs and an affordable place to shop.

I mean don't get me wrong I love shopping at small mom and pop type stores when I can, but that's because I'm fortunate enough to afford it. I would never look down on someone that needs to shop at Walmart or another discounter in order to provide for his or her family.

Wal-Mart is the only company in the area that would give my uncle a job. Granted, he was a 50-something bipolar schizophrenic, but it kept him busy. In my opinion a job at Wal-Mart shouldn'tcome with health insurance or cushy benefits...it's fucking Wal-Mart. Go get an associates degree, at least.

Less fortunate people would not be able to afford a lot of things/support their families without Walmart. A lot of people hate the place but it serves a valuable purpose.

Who's the guy who always used to go ape**** on the other site during any wal-mart thread?? I wonder what he has to say about this? I am sure he would spin it that wal-mart should have given more or is just looking to profit off the tax write-off.

Walmart serves a purpose but they fuck over so many people doing it.

And the company Walmart gives a fair amount to charity but look up how much the Walton's give. They barely give anything and they all have billions of dollars.

this is the equivalent of me donating $3 to charity.

they probably spent $2 million dollars just to tell people that they gave $2 million to fight hunger.
