I like the majority of those guys. Cash is/was great, but I like Strait too much not to vote for him.

How you gonna start a thread about GOAT country musician and misspell Strait?
Also, the thread title and poll title have different meanings.

If were talking old style country then have to go with waylon jennings and cannot believe hes not on the list. If im to go with the more modern would go with hank jr hes had tons of good albums and songs.

I'm sorry but without Hank Williams, there IS NO country music. I encourage everyone who doesn't have one already, to go out and buy a Hank Williams Sr. anthology and take your next day off and listen to it. Keep in mind, he wrote 95% or more of his own songs. All of these guys mentioned range from very good to great, but the only word you can use to describe Hank is transcendent. It's Hank Williams Sr.
and everybody else.
And also, this poll should be modified to include Waylon Jennings (3rd IMO, behind Johnny Cash)...and also a list with 9 names that has Garth Brooks on it but not Patsy Cline is not cool. Loretta Lynn is GREAT, but Patsy Cline was, is and always will be the best voice to ever sing country music. Period.

The way I see it:
George Strait & Garth Brooks are great singers/entertainers, but not big on musicianship. They strum a guitar a little bit and that's it. Same goes to Loretta Lynn and some others. Although the argument can be made as to the voice being an instrument, and I'm OK with that, too. (but this is just mho)
So for me, that narrows the field down quite a bit.
I picked Johnny Cash, but might have voted for Waylong Jennings if he were on the list.
Because not only did they really play guitar, they also wrote alot of their songs, arranged them, and so on. Personally, I think it takes more than just being a good singer to be a musician. It's many things and not just one (or two) thing.

I believe when you look at their whole bodies of work, George Strait is entering his 5th decade and has something like 60 #1 hits. His latest stuff, I'm not that crazy about, but everything else is great.
I believe Alan Jackson should be on this list also.
