Good game so far from Algeria. Love to have the 0 - 0 draw or an Algerian win.

this is tough. I dont know what result I am going to want next game from England/Slovenia yet so I have no clue if I am happy that Carragher is now suspended for it lol.

The way Algeria is playing defense, I'm not so confident in our ability to beat them by 2 goals.

If they tie 0-0, we won't need to beat them by two. A one goal victory would put us through.

We need a win going into the knockout stage. If we limp into the second round with 3 ties, we'll most likely get knocked out first game.

I was wrong before actually, we still need to win that game to go through (as Algeria would have 4 points to our 3 with a tie). But a 0-0 tie puts our destiny in our hands.

Definitely. England/Algeria draw. We control our own destiny and still have a chance to win the group.

Slovenia 4
U.S. 2
England 2 (with tie today)
Algeria 1 (with tie today)

We need to beat Algeria to advance. A tie with Algeria would give them 2 points and U.S. 3. We'd have to hope Slovenia beat England for us to advance under this scenario.

My cousin just sent me a link to this picture. I didn't notice this watching the game but it is a pretty funny mistake.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, England's problem stems from the huge influx of foriegn players in the Premiership. Young up and coming English players have no chance to develop because they get zero playing time in the top league. It would be a different story if alot of their players went abroad but they simply do not because of the population.

That's a screenshot from FIFA '10 (the video game). The flag shown is Niger, not Nigeria. Niger didn't qualify and Nigeria isn't in Germany's group.

From Soccernet's gamecast:
Gerrard was just asked what was missing from the game. "Goals" was his answer. Insightful.

The US will most likely get knocked out in the round of 16 regardless.

Not positive about that. They make it to the knockout stage, they get Germany/Serbia/Ghana. Now, I don't like our chances against Germany, but Serbia or Ghana I'd give us a 50/50 shot.

Serbia would be a favorable draw (out of those 3). I don't like the prospects of Germany or Ghana.

1. I disagree

2. Making it to the round of 16 gives us a TREMENDOUS help in trying to be seeded for the next WC. It would still be a huge long-shot, but this result would replace the disastrous 1998 which has been killing us.

How has 1998 been killing the US? They made the quarters in 2002, and i think we know what happened the following world cup.

You do know how the seeding for the WC works right???? Usually they take current Fifa Rankings and past 3 WC perfromances. If we make the round of 16 or with a ton of luck the last 8 that gives us a disaster and 2 quarters to go along with Brazil hosting (so a shit team not taking a seed) we will have 3 years to try and break into the top 8 (or right around there).

Just saw the replay of the non-goal, the dude blew the whistle before Donovan ever kicked it. If NOTHING else, that deserves a no kick and thus, a re-kick for the USA. He really was very timid with his arm movements as well. I really dont think he knew why he blew the whistle so he gave Slovenia a free kick....Terrible.

Isn't that only for the top 7 to go in the first pot though? I thought the other pots were organized by continent.

yeah, but top 8. The first pot are the seeds though. We have a chance to be in that top 8 but a bad WC here would kick us out and allow someone else at 9 or 10 in the rankings possibly be the 8th seeded team. Liek I said, its a longshot, but the 2 good WC showing would definitely help the cause.

Well, I just finished watching today's matches.

That performance is why Serbia is/was my darkhorse. Even before the 2nd yellow for Klose, Serbia was playing Germany very tough. I think that group gets even more confusing tomorrow. Australia gets at least a draw with Ghana IMO.

The U.S. got screwed by the ref, but it never should have come to that situation. More terrible selections from Bradley, and a complete lack of motivation to start the match. But hey, at least we aren't England. That may have been the most uninspired performance I've ever seen on such a big stage. It was just painful to watch.

I've had a bad feeling about the Algeria match for about a month now, so with neither the U.S. or England taking care of business today I'm now very worried about our advancement.
