I Stepped on a Garden Rake in Sandals...

...my 4 year old son and I decided to start a garden this year. We were out planting carrots last night when my neighbor called me over. I set down my rusty, old wooden handled garden rakes (circa 1930-ish probably). We went and visited for a minute, then walked back to the garden. I was wearing very light, Nike sandals.

So, I stepped right onto the rake, which I set down "prong-up." Three prongs penetrated my sand (right at my heel), two made it through the sandal and about an inch into my heel.

I dropped...struggled to get the rake out of my foot. When I did...I didn't see anything....seconds later....blood everywhere. I hobbled up to the house with my four year old bawling....exact words..."daddy, I don't want you to go to Heaven..." :(

I lost enough blood that I had to lay down on the driveway with my foot up on a chair. My wife had been giving my twins a bath so I sat out there for about 10 minutes bleeding. I had my 4 year old get me some paper towels, which I pressed onto my foot, while it was propped up.

I finally got "most" of the bleeding to stop. I actually was going to go to the ER, but my wife talked me out of it. I soaked it, cleaned it with alcohol and a q-tip and scrubbed it. Last Tetanus shot was right before my 4 year old was born, and they're good for 10 years.

Can hardly walk today. Very sore and tender.

Anyway...what would you have done? ER or sucked it up?

I wouldn't have set the rake down prongs up. Take the opportunity to teach your son not to be a moron like his dad.

That's a sharp ass rake. Garden rakes you buy today aren't sharp enough to do that, I don't think.

I probably would have gone to the ER if the prongs were an inch into my heel.

The funny thing is....it was not sharp. Like I said...it's probably 50+ years old. Dull...

I must have just stepped on it the right way, I guess.

Call that if you want, I really don't care. If it didn't hurt so bad putting on a sock and shoe this morning, I'd take it off and take a photo.

I would've went to hospital.

I don't care how long they say a shot is good for, i'd be getting another.

Your foot is rusty probably.

Myself though, I would've probably kicked the rake before stepping on it.

Sounds like you're a high stepper.

You probably needed to get that cleaned out if it was rusty. More than likely it will become infected. I doubt it went an inch though or else you would have hit bone and you would have been in agony in your backyard believing your son that you were in fact going to heaven.

Your wife didn't want you to go to the ER because when the infection jets bad enough lock jaw will set in and she won't hear you ask for or be able to eat a damn sammich.

I would have gone to the ER without a doubt.

Might not be a bad idea to go to urgent care this evening when they open. They'll clean it out and probably write a Rx for some antibiotics and possibly pain meds too, recommend followup with your doctor. Urgent care is normally cheaper than the ER, at least it is on my insurance plan.

Last time I had an incident, they told me at the ER that my last shot was still good but insisted that I get another to be safe, so you should probably go get one. It wasn't about money either, the doctors at Salem hospital aren't smart enough for that. lol

THIS! Another lesson for your child. LMAO!

That sucks though man, I'm doubting the inch deep too because you would have gone to the ER no questions asked on that--but I don't doubt that it was nasty enough to make it seem like they went an inch in. I've seen some nasty injuries in my day.

Okay...maybe I exaggerated with the "inch." My wife tells me it's an inch...

I called and am going to my doctor this afternoon to have it looked at AND to get another tetanus shot (to be safe).
