Not being a member does not mean you aren't a great university, or not a leader in research or academics.
Actually pretty sure it does. If you aren't a member, you are probably a glorified community college. Sorry, that's just the way it is.

Good academic schools that aren't members:

Wake Forest
William and Mary
Boston College
Lehigh
Rochester
George Washington
Boston
Pepperdine

All of which consistenly outrank many members of the AAU

Rochester is a glorified community college outside of their science programs. I would know because I almost played golf there, and turned it down because their business school is complete shit.

Look, if the AAU thought any of those schools were leaders in research, they would add them. Clearly, THE top schools in the country think those schools are garbage, and I'll take their opinion over yours any day.

AAU schools (and most all research institutions) dump most all the research money into graduate studies. Undergraduates (and therefore athletes) get little to nothing out of it unless they come back for a Masters or Ph.D

The Big Ten just uses it to make it sound like they have smart athletes, even though they are in fact no different than any other BCS conference when it comes down to it.

The AAU research institution thing is overrated. UC generated $221.2 million in research dollars in 2008 which is more than 19 AAU institutions, including 3 Big 10 schools.

The AAU is no differnt than some private country clubs that want to admit their friends and some neighbors so they can look down on everyone else.

Btw, as someone else noted, why are people bringing up academics in a NFL draft thread? Do people honestly beleive that if they root for Team A their players are smarter than teams from Team B because the university is an AAU member? If you believe that I have some beachfront property in Oklahoma I'd like to sell you.
