Jackets have something like an 11% chance of pulling the first pick in the 2010 draft. Obviously one player won't solve the team's woes, but being able to pick up someone like center Tyler Seguin, winger Taylor Hall, or defenseman Cam Fowler would be a boon to the team. I'm hoping they fall into the one or two spot so they can get a realistic shot at Seguin; he could be the first-line center this team so desperately needs alongside Nash.

2006: Erik Johnson
2005: Sidney Crosby
2004: Alex Ovechkin
2003: Marc-Andre Fleury
2002: Rick Nash

With the exception of Johnson (and he's had some injury issues) every single one of these guys is a total game-changer. The forwards picked at that spot are the best of the best. Getting another player of that caliber on the Jackets would be awesome, awesome, awesome. Let's hope.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. A center would be a great pickup and probably our most pressing need. We drafted a young defenseman last year and hopefully he can make up to the big leagues soon and start contributing. I think no matter who we draft, they need to contribute immediately.

Totally blanked on John Moore being in the system ... duh. Looks like he's having a solid season in juniors, 61 pts in 74 games. Hopefully he's ready to contribute at the big club sooner rather than later (like, say, next season?)

The one thing that could be said about that tho..is in the NBA, and in NHL, there is enough of the individual element that one can still shine on a shitty team. In the NFL you really are dependant more on your other teammates ya know. YOu can ea great QB but if you dont have much else you really are scrwed.

Basebsall...typically takes longer to get to the bigs....i dont know how many of those picks were from HS...

The Jackets can only get the #1 overall pick or the #4 or #5 pick. The NHL lottery is pretty goofy. You can only move up four spots if you win the lottery and can only fall one spot. So if one of the teams 5-8 wins the lottery they move up 4 spots and the Jackets fall to #5. If the Jackets win the lottery they can move all the way up to #1. If someone in the top 3 or someone below #8 wins the lottery the Jackets will stay at #4.

It's sad when we don't even remember last year's first round pick. I couldn't remember his name and didn't bother looking it up. I think the major key in whoever we draft is that they must be able to contribute immediately, or this team will be in the cellar for awhile.

How many first rounders are contributed to last year's team? Nash ... Klesla ... Voracek ... ?? Filatov is in Russia, Picard, Brule both busted, Brassard has been hurt, Zherdev is a bitch, Leclaire is gone. Ouch.

Considering ALL of those guys I just listed were top 10 picks, you'd think more than Nash would pan out to be an above-average player in the NHL. Voracek could be on his way, but he's not there yet.

Rocks, Brule is not a bust. He has played well all year for Edmonton.

He hasn't been awful, but 72 points in 222 career games from a guy drafted top 10 in 2005 is leaning toward busttown.

Eh true. Here are some bug "busts" through out the top 10.

Svitov (2001)
Chistov (2001)
Blackburn(2001)
Taticek(2002)
Montoya(2004)
Picard (2004)
Turris(2007)

Hardly any top 10 busts in the 2003, 2005, and 2006 draft.

That I'll agree with, he's at least contributing on an NHL team. There are a lot of big picks out there that make you scratch your head. A lot that don't though (Anze Kopitar, selected five after Brule in the 2005 draft, has 285 pts in 318 career games ... tell me the Jackets wouldn't have LOVED to pick him instead!)

I get the feeling the top of this draft class is going to be very good as well; Seguin and Hall are about as close a 1-2 as we've had in many years.

Crazy part is, Boston could very realistically end up with one of those two because they absolutely fleeced Toronto in the Kessel trade. They already have some good talent there with Bergeron, Savard (when/if he's healthy again), Rask, Chara, etc. Add in another guy with top-flight talent and they'll be a major player in the East.

Columbus doesn't typically have the kind of luck to have things fall their way, so they'll probably end up falling a spot.

Some franchises fall into good fortune on this stuff (Pittsburgh is a prime example) while others just go on being mediocre.
