For the record, I'm gonna say that the whole Masset-Votto play at first was Masset's fault. It looked like he was looking to second for the double play but Votto was ready to toss it to him. Votto didn't throw it to Masset cuz Masset wasn't looking for the ball. That's my take on it.
That is classic PFP right there. Someone, typically the catcher, needs to be communicating on where to go with the ball. He is the only one who has the big pitcher and can see what is going on.
JV looked to second first. As for not tossing because Massett wasnt looking....I dont buy it. I think JV didnt toss it because after he made his gaffe he didnt think the guy would be out (would been very close). the pitcher at some point isnt always looking. JV needs to toss the ball where it can be caught and it is the pitchers reponsibility to catch it. Just like a catcher throws to second on a steal whether the guy is wating for it or not..he has to trust the guy will be there.
I wasnt on the field so I dont know what communications were made. The ball wasnt hit that hard and that woulda been a difficult play to get the guy at second because of the angle and where he fielded it
