First of all I want to say thanks to Coach for all of the Great Seasons of Dalton Football! With a lot of talent coming back this will be a very attractive job. Couple interesting things to think about while we go through this process: Whoever we hire what kind of offense will they bring? Will we keep those black helmets? I am hoping we can hire someone as soon as we can so the players can get confortable with the coach. Let's Go Dogs!

Kinda sad to see him go, but time marches on. I am sure as many Dalton supporters are sad to see him go as there are those who are happy to see him gone.

He had a great run.

Glad he went out on a high note.

Did he retire completely or did he move on to a new school. Dalton although it is a small school. I would think would be a great place to be a head coach. Decent talent and I know the town gets behind the program.

Ram had a good run and Dalton almost always was competitive. A good head coach will change the offense to suit the players he has. A year ago Orrville mostly was a passing offense and this year more running. I would think this would be a great job for a young coach whose been an offense or defense coordinator to get started in.

royal - he retired completely from teaching (35 years) and head coaching. He said it is pretty likely he will end up as an assistant with the right situation, but probably no more head coaching. WIll be interesting to see what applicants they get. Good tradition, community, and school system and some good talent returning at Dalton. I really can't see any of the current assistants as head coaching options but who knows - Doty is probably the only possibility. Indorf is a definite candidate. Will have to see who else comes in. Probably a long list of off/def coord. looking for that first chance.

Thanks to Ram for some great football! Although he's been planning this for some time, it is gracious of him to go when there is talent for a new guy to work with. I look for him to possibly assist at Cloverleaf where I think his son was assisting when we did our 7 on 7 there in the summer. He is also a popular social studies/current events teacher and will be missed.
One name I've heard kicked around was the new jr hi principal, but he's on the selection committee so can be eliminated from the list.

I would like to see them go completely out of the area and possibly pick up an assistant coach from the mighty MAC conference out in Western Ohio. We need someone who is willing to stay for the long haul. There is nothing better than having a tenured coach for 10 or more yrs. Teams that tend to change coaches every year or two never get a tradition started. We have been really lucky at Dalton as far as tenure goes with Mcfarren, Maltarich and Ramsay.

its no coincidence that the more successful programs are those where coaches are there for a long time as we see in the WCL. It helps that there is a variety of teacher positions opening up, that should help broaden the pool of candidates. I would rather they look outside of the program,, but they will have to see what their options are. If they can get a coach in place by early February as is there plan, they should be in good shape. Its really impossible to do it much quicker.

Why go out of the area? Indorf has 2 Nat'l Championship rings. Prolly the best lineman to ever play the game at Dalton. Besides, he knows what it means to play "Bulldog football".

yea I don't see any reason to go out of the area - they can look east or west, I just think they should go outside of the program.

I heard Indorf teaches a similar subject that Ramsay did. He sounds like a good fit, and would have been a good fit at Norwayne.

I hope he gets a shot, he knows the town and has cut his teeth at the college level as an assistant.

no kidding - that's a pile of applications to go through. many of them are likely young guys just out of school, but a large list nonetheless. Now they are whittling them down to decide who to interview. Certainly is a big plus that there will be a couple teaching openings as well. Will be interesting to see who is in the running.

So no coach has been named yet I presume? Let's hope they take their time and hire the right guy for the job. I know coaches in that area are involed heavily in the area so that takes a special kind of coach.

I also know some schools with head coaching positions open are only taking applications from head coaches with play off experience. Do you know if that is the case here? I mean how important is play off experience in the critera of the new coach?

I highly doubt they are limiting it to head coaches with playoff experience. That would lead to quite a short list most likely as guys with those qualifications are usually tied up or past their prime. While Dalton is certainly quite an attractive small school job, there are not many schools outside of the largest and most successful that would attract current head coaches with playoff experience to leave their situation.

I don't disagree. I just have some friends who coach high school football and have told me that in certain areas if you want to takeover the head coach job somewhere else you won't be considered unless you have play off experience. But you are right if Dalton places that stipulation on the new hire, the cast of characters would be limited. I guess trying to move up a division or so would be attractive to a younger coach who has made the play offs a couple of times. Moving down to a smaller school might not be so attractive.

Sounds like the new coach in Dalton is going to have to start his own new tradition of winning.

i agree - hiring doty for the head coaching job would be a mistake and would do nothing to help the program. ramsay was a very good coach for a long time, but the program was getting a little stale at the end. They need someone to get some excitment going again and get the numbers back where they should be. I don't think that will happen with someone from the current staff. I think he is a solid assistant, but that's it. Would be curious to know people's opinions of some of the other candidates like carr from Perry, ramos from Glenoak, billker from Hoover, or easterling from Northwest.

Hoover? Perry? Glenoak? Wow, those are big football schools. Didn't think we'd draw from those. Must be assistants.

They are all assistants. Dalton has time to make the right choice. Best thing they can do is take the time to make the right choice.
