School cooks do slave over a hot stove all day or at least warm something up from the previous day.

This could be the way they are portrayed in the show, but look at the difference in attitude when he goes to the high school from the cooks. They are a lot more friendly. I've seen first hand in a couple different schools where the elementary cooks have a much more negative attitude than the high school cooks; both as a student and a teacher.

Alice at the elementary school is GOAT.

She is just telling him how it is.

He wants to make a change that isn't even feasible.

Why isn't it feasible?

The fresh menu is quite a bit more expensive than the usual stuff plus it takes double the kitchen staff to prepare it.

I'm in a MA program and alot of ppl in my class are teachers so I hear some good stories about the shit that goes on at school. This one lady said that at her school they count ketchup as the vegetable, lol. WTF?!?!?!?! That's pretty sad if you ask me....

Fantastic show! It sheds light on a lot.

To the above comments about the ketchup, they probably also count iceberg lettuce as a vegetable, which it is. But it's basically just water. You can eat that stuff all day every day and it won't do much for you. But I suppose it's better than nothing. America is just so disgustingly backward when it comes to many things these days, but food and fiscal responsibility are the worst in my opinion. Everything is a food product here, it's gross as hell.

My sister went to the Culinary Institute of America, but decided instead of being a fantastic chef she'd move home to Ohio and launch an organic farm to combat so many of the bad food habits people have. That was a year ago, she's the only (which is pitiful) one selling organic foods on the farmers' market circuit in Toledo and has a successful CSA program too. One person at a time we're changing views up here in NW Ohio!
