Since I've received a few PM's about it...there is nothing new yet. They were hoping to get the surgery in yesterday..but they weren't able to fit her in on the schedule. So it is for sure going to be at 12:30 pm today. Good news is...they don't believe it's cancerous. But depending on what it's attached to, she could end up losing all her lady parts if it's attached to her uterus, have to wear a colostomy bag for the rest of her life if it's attached to her intestines, and numerous other scenarios. From the cat scans..they believe it's only attached to the stomach...if that's the case...just a simple remove with no permanent damage. The Dr. also said he believes it's been in there for around a year.

She just got out of surgery. Everything went PERFECT. They were able to save everything and only had to remove the tumor. They don't believe it's cancerous either. Doc said don't throw a party just yet, b/c they don't have the results back, but he'd say he's about 90% positive it's not cancer. They did get a surprise when they opened her up. It was not the size of a basketball like they thought! It was the size of TWO basketballs! Doc is having them weight it, but hasn't heard anything 'official'. He said he guesstimates it ways between 25 and 30 pounds!!! Said it was by far one of the biggest he has seen.

how fucking scary would this be?

good to know she's going to be fine. I'm curious as to why they think it formed in the first place. I'm not prying, but why do tumors form if they're not cancerous?

I'm not sure. That's a good question. I'll see if I can find out, or if anyone knows the answer. Please fill us in.

My dad's Dr's answer was "we don't know". His tumor was twice the size of his kidney, but no cancer was found.

I'm glad everything went great with your sister GoChiefs. It usually takes 3-5 days to get the results back. My dad didn't have his full results till he went to his 10th day staple removal.

tumors grow because a cell continues to divide even when you dont need them to. then those cells divide, even when you dont need them to. benign tumors do not invade local tissue. they typically do not come back because you remove all the problemed/defective cells in the process of removing the tumor. benign tumors can be fatal if they grow to the point where they push against vital organs (i.e. the brain).

so basically, she had a malfunction cell that continued to divide and divide and divide until it got to the size it is now. because the tumor was removed and it did not invade any tissue, all of those cells are now out of the body, and she should be just fine

glad to hear it all went well!

That's the how but not the why. Like I said, most Dr's will say they don't know on the "why".

well what it comes down to is a defecting, malfunctioning cell, but why that cell is defecting/malfunctioning is unknown

Well...she got to go home today. Of course she's still in some pain, but it's under control. If you've been curious as to what a 30 pound tumor looks like..just click on the link. Figured I'd hyperlink it for those that don't want to see it. It is pretty graphic and nasty. Lol
