Triglycerides were way spiked.

Cholesterol was high.

HDL was low.

LDL was high.

Mine was high and cutting way back on sugar intake took everything way down…..the heart healthy does as well.

Seems like just being consistent with the effort and mindful of what you are taking in makes most everything better.

I don't think it's bro science, but if you have high LDL there is a more advanced test.  Basically, LDL is of two types: large fluffy particles that are not harmful and may be beneficial, and small dense particles that are detrimental.

I haven't researched it in-depth, but I did read that a few places.  Maybe that test only rarely identifies such exceptions, but before going on cholesterol meds it's probably worth exploring.

Also, cholesterol is at least partially related to inflammation.  Beyond diet, there may be things to reduce inflammation such as exercise, sleep quality, stress-management, etc.

Oatmeal W/Walnuts, Chia, PB in the morning...almost exclusively. Maybe deviate on a weekend and cook eggs and pancakes. Banana; Avocado; Berries; Hummus; Broccoli; Etc for lunch (rotating, not all of that lol). Dinners I have mixed in beans, quinoa, couscous, salads, cauliflower. Lots of heart healthy stuff. I would say I cheat on lunch 1-2 times a week and have leftover pizza or chipotle, or something. Dinner I am 2x a week we order out or make burgers, or steak, etc. But I have cut way back on read meat and incorporated a lot of heart healthy stuff (nuts, grains, avocado).

Have gone from 215 give or take to 181 this am. Dont track, but just dont eat like a POS anymore. Had horrible blood work 3 years in a row and finally just made the change cold turkey. Been 11 months. I am 1 lb away from a 2 year goal. I am 37 and 6'1, for the record.

I would say I work out with wieghts 4-5 times a week, and on the bike the other 1-2 days. Days I use weights, I am on the bike, but 1/3 of the time.

Dude, that is awesome. Congrats on the hard work and applaud your discipline! Not easy to do something like that.

My belief is that cholesterol is an awful health metric.  A Coronary Calcium scan is the test.

Statin side effects don't outweigh any potential benefit in my mind

This is what I had done. It came back 0 — which is great — but the warnings were there for 5-10-20 yrs down the line.

I go back for the annual physical and blood work in 2 months. If everything is under control, the challenge for me will be to stay this disciplined knowing I have a bit of “wiggle room” to cheat an extra day here or there.

That makes a lot of sense.  I've seen reference to several studies that statins may only be effective if you've been diagnosed with a heart issue.
