This. If you know offense, you know defense. If you know defense, you know offense. It won't be to the same lengths, but the knowledge is there. A HC just needs to be a leader, see the 3 phases as a whole, and hold the coordinator accountable. I've always been a fan of a HC who is the overseer, not a play caller. Which is why I hate Garrett calling plays in Dallas(don't mean to derail, just similar to your point with Shurmur).
