I think this is a large overreaction by Coach K and duke fans.

I'm normally not a fan of rushing the court as it happens too frequently. And I understand that there can be safety concerns, but part of that is the basketball experience. Basketball venues are designed in a such a way that the crowd is right on top of the court and players. This is nothing new. As far as your hypothetical with all hell breaking loose, I'd say that's more likely to happen from a team losing in a very frustrating fashion than from kids celebrating a win. People tend not to be as violent when they are happy as opposed to angry.

And the video provided shows that there was plenty of security to protect them from any potential conflict.

Coach K and Duke fans are just upset they lost and are venting about rushing the court because of that.

Shut up about court stormings already. Kids are only in college once, let them have some fucking fun. If people are yelling at you, walk by them and ignore them like you do all game long.

When someone actually goes up to a player and physically tries to hurt them or a coach, then come talk to me about changing shit.

Court stormings are for teams that are on the victorious side of a monumental upset. Not for teams that are from the same conference and have won multiple national championships (see N.C. State versus Duke). Virginia's fans acted as if they were at an electronic dance party. It was a middle of the week win versus a common opponent that they play two, sometimes three times a year. It was a complete embarrassment. No team with a fairly accomplished basketball history from a major conference should EVER rush the court.

Unless you're a Hickory Husker, stay the fuck off the court.

What some people here are completely failing to realize is that there actually have been players injured and careers ended as a result of the oblivious court storming of students.

Take, for instance, the much publicized story of Joe Kay. Kay was a high school basketball player from California whose bright future and full ride to play volleyball at Stanford was taken away from him after being bowled over from behind by a mob oblivious fans "having ****ing fun" during a storming of the court which concluded in Kay being buried under a dog pile. As he laid helplessly under the heap of fans, blow flow to his brain was cut off, resulting in a stroke that left Kay partially paralyzed on his right side, unable to articulate words due to a condition called aphasia, and with a life forever changed.
LA Times wrote:Just about everything he'd ever attempted had been a slam dunk, his mother would say, so Kay's future seemed unlimited, his success a certainty.And then the game ended.

In the immediate aftermath, the crowd stormed the court in celebration, one particularly exuberant fan running straight at Kay and bowling him over. The star of the game wound up under a dog pile, tackled and trampled and terrified.

His neck was twisted, blood flow to his brain restricted.

Not quite old enough to vote, he suffered a stroke.

Bottom line: Fans have no business entering players' personal space and should never be allowed on the court. It has absolutely nothing to do with fucking winning and losing or being mad about a loss. Nothing. It has to everything to do with ensuring players are kept safe from careless injuries that can be prevented. Because one injury is too many.

Rec - I understand your point and respect your passion for the game and Duke, but your example is an exception to an event that is seldom harmful. That article was from almost 5 years ago. If I had anything against Virginia storming the court, it's that how much of an accomplishment is it beating Duke this year? This was their 4th ACC loss.

Assuming they don't win the ACC, Duke could very well end up a #2 or #3 seed and lose in the first round again.

You said players. That's plural. Then mention the probably one story out there. And it wasn't even in a college setting, correct?

These kids are in college. They should storm the field or court if they beat a top 5 team or a top 5 tram they never ever beat. K blew this way out of proportion. The security was slow but absolutely nothing happened. He wad butthurt he lost and had to stand at the tunnel for a few seconds till they could clear a path. Get over it.

I love seeing huge upsets and storming the court.

And k's line about a kid cussing at him is stupid too. You ignored it for 40 minutes with students right behind you. You can't ignore it for 1 more minute.

Sorry he just comes off butthurt all the way around.

If Duke doesn't lose that game last night, does K still feel that court storming should be banned?

He just comes off as a sore loser who is using his power in college baskebtall to try and stop something just because it happens to him more than others. Definition of butthurt.

Jay Bilas, who is generally probably smarter than many here, also agrees that the court is for players and that fans have no business being inside the personal space of players. While he played for Coach K, his opinion has absolutely nothing to do with Duke losing at Virginia. Plenty of other people in the business agree as well.

If a star player from Kansas or Indiana ever gets paralyzed or suffers a season-ending injury as a result of being bowled over by a spontaneous court rush your tunes would dramatically change. Regardless of whether that's a rare occurrence or not, as evidenced by my post above, it has happened before and one time is too many. As another example, a player from BGSU in the early 2000s was injured after being blind-sided by group of students and missed the majority of the season. Injuries do and can happen and there is absolutely no need for it.

If the Duke fans really are clever then they should rush the court at home when they beat Georgia Tech or Boston College. If they made a mockery out of it they would develop rules to eliminate it.

Virginia was a 2-point favorite against Duke. I fail to see how Virginia winning a game in which it was favored is a court rushing feat.

Fans of Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky never rush the court, and yet, somehow, I am guessing they are still able to have some ****ing fun. Give me a break. The trend of treating pretty much any win as if you just beat the Dream Team is so played out that it can't even be that much fun anymore. In many instances, it's just downright stupid. Florida Atlantic rushed the court last season after it beat George Mason, which was riding a one-game winning streak at the time. Big time feat. What fun.

The storming of the court isn't even spontaneous anymore. It's a planned event that has become completely watered down. Celebrating every win like you just hit a home run to win the World Series is just stupid.

After Wisconsin beat Ohio State in Madison in 2011, Jared Sullinger was approached and spat on by a fan during the ensuing court rushing celebration. Most players are not going to just "walk by" and "ignore" being spat on. They are going to challenge that fan either verbally or physically, and then that fan -- and others around them -- are going to retaliate back and a brawl is going to start. Just because Sullinger didn't take reprisal, it doesn't mean other players wouldn't. Many other players would have dropped that fan to the ground and it would have become the story of the century in college basketball. As we saw with the Malice in the Palace, all it takes is one idiot to mess with the wrong guy and instigate an all-out brawl.

It must be fun...I haven't seen a kid in tv who was crying while storming the court. They always seem to be pretty pumped!

Who cares who they beat, what ranking it was, whatever. If kids want to rush the court after beating Penn State I'd have no issue with it. Why does it have to be a special thing? Why can't it be whenever the students fell like having some fun at a sporting event?

I think we're mostly looking at this from entirely differently angles. I'll just agree to disagree.

And my angle has nothing to do with Duke losing. If there's any silver lining in a court rushing after a Duke loss, it's that it just reinforces that the Blue Devils are still THE game in America and that teams want to beat Duke more than anyone else. I take that as mad respect. With that said, I think court rushing is completely stupid in the majority of cases and potentially dangerous as exhibited by past incidents and injuries.

Absolutely.......... According to numerous reports he exchanged some blue language with a fan and was so angry he had to be restrained. It was also reported that assistant coach Jeff Capel used some colorful language. If he makes this about court storming his boorish behavior is not the focus of the media.

Your knowledge is completely wrong. Coach K has held this stance against court storming for years.

From ESPN in 2006 after loss to FSU:

Duke coach Mike Krzyzweski had his team -- except the five in the game -- taken to the locker room before Al Thornton took the final free throws although 1.7 seconds remained on the clock. He said he feared for his players safety.

I am positive that you can read, but I will direct you to my earlier posts where I point out the serious season and career-ending injuries that have resulted due to court stormings. Who cares if it was only a few cases. It's too fucking many. Is it really that difficult to comprehend?
