I will never understand why people commit suicide when they aren't on their death bed. Its hard for me to have sympathy for them. Feel very bad for their family though.

Some senior committed suicide at a local high school yesterday. It's rumored that he did it because of bullying. He killed himself with 2 weeks of high school left. I just don't get it, and probably never will.

News out here in San Diego is crazy. He was like the football god here. But it seems he did have some mental issues, caused by football or not. He was a great player, arguably the best linebacker to play the game.

Looks to me like the NFL is involved in all kinds of programs to promote and research safety not only for the players in the league, but for youth sports as well.

Oh the old "I got called out for putting words in somebody else's mouth so I won't acknowledge that, I'll deflect the blame" tactic.

Has the NFL done ANYTHING to improve player safety regarding head injuries recently? Fine players? That doesn't stop the hits. Require rules to be followed for playing possibly-concussed players after a hard hit? See: Michael Vick, Colt McCoy, etc. Conceded to veteran players that football was the cause of their chronic injuries, conditions, and diseases? IT WILL BE A COLD DAY IN HELL.

But good thing you fell for that little PR stunt of their's that you linked to. It seems to really be making a difference!

Moved kick offs back to reduce head on head collisions.

This would be like reducing the speed limit on all roads to make any accidents less severe when the actual problem was that the cars were unsafe.

it's still reducing the amount of injuries, therefore reducing concussions and helping player safety.

I don't care about the argument in general, just pointing out that they at least did something to reduce it since you thought otherwise. I personally think it's a violent game, they get paid millions of dollars to play this game, and they have helmets/pads/etc. to protect them. Injuries are going to happen in this sport, plain and simple. You have maybe 1 in a 1000 players kiling themselves over head injuries sustained and people get up in arms about it.

If any other occupation/product killed 1 in 1000 of its employees/users, the government would shut it down. Being a sport that people enjoy, and the athletes making tons of money have nothing to do with it.

I know two or three years ago I read an article either in SI or ESPN about the Patriots team Dr reducing concussions. The Dr was using XRays to create mouthpieces that would properly align the players jaw bones. His theroy was that by alligning the jawbone properly it helped asorb the concussion because the bone wasnt moving around as much. In the three years Patriots players had worn them they had like 80% less concussions then other teams. He took his research and the NFL rejected it because some players complained it was uncomfortable and it was two small of a sample size.

because a few former football players did it, football is to blame? FWIW, Seau was never diagnosed with a concussion in the pros.

Yes, several times I recommended that all American football teams stop contact immediately and convert to flag football. Another strawman argument. You guys aren't doing a very good job of convincing me that I'm wrong when you can't even get my point straight. Let me spell it out for you:

THE NFL NEEDS TO DO EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER TO REDUCE CONCUSSIONS BY IMPROVING MEDICAL TECHNIQUES, IMPROVING EQUIPMENT, AND IMPROVING PLAYER/COACH EDUCATION.

Whatever they have done so far is not even close to enough.

CTE doesn't even require a full on concussion to take place, just repeated blows to the head. Or are you gonna tell me he didn't experience that either? :rolleyes:

Also, not being diagnosed with a concussion means nothing. The NFL didn't even start taking that seriously until 2 or 3 years ago.

Well, that happened before Dave Duerson (former NFL player) shot himself in the chest to preserve his brain for medical research.

The players don't know the risks. Neither do doctors and scientists, which is why this is still being researched heavily.
