I have deer dogs, I was thinking those were more like horse dogs. We'll have to pick a big league meet or tournament you host.

the grapevine says he was hurt out at Lima....not sure if he will be back for WCAL, but I would guess he will wrestle hurt at Sectionals if he isnt healed yet.

Format for Saturday...7 & 6 person weights = 2 pools. 5 and less = 1 pool. Seeding will be important as the 1 & 2 seeds will wrestle in the last round...but not necessarily for 1st place in some instances. Placement points will be awarded as well 2 points for every win (not bye), 2 more for a pin, 1 1/2 for a tech fall, 1 for a major. We'll see how the last round shakes down. Might be less dramatic if some weights will not be for 1st place.... Looking forward to 138, 145 and 152 in particular (not sure about Heldenbrand).

Thanks Beast, the grapevine was right.

Seth Heldenbrand has been nursing an undisclosed injury from the Lima tournament. He has been sitting out in order to rest for the WCAL & postseason tournaments.

sources- Ashland TG & guy with the Hillsdale shirt that sat next to me at Mansfield BW3 yesterday.

Soooooo whats the parallel on evening out the pools if there is a 7 man pool, ( a pool of 3 and a pool of 4), who benefits, the #1 seed or the #2 seed? The lesser pool receives no bye points?? The "Final" match may not be for 1st place....HUH???

What kind of crap shoot is this? "Congrats son, you didnt get to wrestle the top kid in the finale, but you finished 1st-2nd"

Perhaps next year we should just "over-schedule" and eliminate the WCAL tournament as Chippewa did last year....this is getting ridiculous.

Can ANYONE break it down a little better to "SELL" this format as to why it is better and who benefits????

Lookout...Norwayne may be your county champs this year.....

The format of this years tournament is pretty simple. Not sure why so many are struggling with it? You need to win matches to win the tournament. No freebies.

Just remember the sign that hangs on the edge of a small town which reads, "Lattasburg. Abandon hope all ye who enter here."

Last year's scoring format as follows:

16 points for 1st
12 for 2nd
10 for 3rd
8 for 4th
Plus bonus & advancement points

This year's scoring format as follows:

16 points for 1st
12 for 2nd
10 for 3rd
8 for 4th
Plus bonus points

Last three years I have accurately predicted the team champion without factoring in bonus and advancement points. Unfortunately for me my busy schedule has kept me from amassing the data required to predict this year's contest (however if I had lineups I'd be willing to take a crack.) I would imagine that this contest will not come down to bonus point, but placement as it always does. Figure the placers, award the appropriate points an ana boom! Team champion.

Beast: If I'm not mistaken you got your shirt and I never have gotten around calling for your man card on the no show. I think you told me you needed to curl your hair or something. Yeah, and Spencer is running the league tournament same way he coaches the team. He'll show up, smile, say a few inspiration words, then we'll prop him up in the corner till Dorksen gets there so he can give a good quote. Sure he rants and raves at the wrestlers and officials during the match, but trust me there's no sound coming to that headset. He's kinda like Joe Pa...well without all that shower stuff.

Thinking about the format... I HATE IT... First off I understand that teams want matches. I do agree with that but this thought process is going to kill what makes the tournament so great. There is not another tournament like it on any of the teams schedules. The atmosphere that surrounds the finals and semi-finals will not be the same this year. It won't. People will still get into the matches and the Waynedale vs Wayne County tension will still be there but it won't have the paszaz of past years. I think its clear that there are some coaches who just don't understand what they've got with this tournament..... Ask Steve Zarlengo, Ask Marcus Benson, Charlie Hardman, Bill Bardy, and any other official who has done a WCAL meet and other league meets.... WCAL is a one of a kind and it is being ruined.... plain and simple... Are the extra "matches" worth ruining this tournament?
(Sorry... i don't consider the extra 20 takedowns that kids like Beam and Fortune are going to rack up on a Dalton or Chippewa kid that they wouldn't see in bracket format as matches. It is a waste of time. These matches don't help these kids one bit.... You don't get better that way. If you want to drill do it in the wrestling room.... Sorry more WCAL matches does not equal a better tournament)

There was a simple fix to the problem and concerns of the coaches... 4 or less man brackets are automatic round robins.... everything else is bracketed. Everywhere else it is done this way. The WCAL was the only tournament where I saw a kid get byes into the finals and screw a kid out of placing in a tournament in 4 man weight class. Instead of fixing the problem they are going to further complicate the tournament with this pool tournament... They are going to create more controversy..... and get rid of the finals.... STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!

I was hoping to get back in time from CVCA to catch the finals but obviously I don't have to worry about that and will head straight home instead. That and I don't want to see 3 kids standing on the first place podium and 1 kid on 4th. That or have to see some kid be placed in first over two others with the same record because of some cockamame format criteria that the coaches will vote on in the case of tie....

WHILE I'M AT IT!!! CALL OHSAA AND TELL THOSE GUYS THAT THE STATE TEAM TOURNAMENT IS A STUPID IDEA!!! STUPID!!! STUPID!!! STUPID!!!

The new format causes kids to wrestle differently and coaches to coach differently. The excitement of a take in the last seconds of the third period to win by one point doesn't benefit the team as greatly as it would have in prior seasons.

Take it for what it is, keep an open mind and maybe you will find this format not only challenging but exciting as well.

Pin to win takes on a whole new meaning this weekend.

Thank you,

The Northwestern Public Relations Department

P.S. Go Huskies!
