Ohio State was hoping/looking for a reason to fire Woody. He was getting old and becoming more and more cantankerous, his offense had become very predictable, he had lost 4 out of the last 5 bowl games. his record that year was 7-4-1. He supplied the reason, he was fired without an exception by anyone.

Ohio State has not been looking for a reason to fire Tressel AND they do not have a reason now.

I hate the feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I try and get pumped for OSU football--the unknown sanctions that will come in August are like a dark cloud hanging overhead....this really sucks.

It's NOT either of those two. JT doesn't mess with the lives of players by telling them they have a scholarship and then later boot them in favor of someone more talented. He mentors young men and tries to get their lives on a sound path. He's often been criticized for giving players too many second chances when they screw up; but he really wants to help these young men become solid citizens.

His history is strong in this regard, and it's why I also want him to stay on as coach. I want him to get the same second chance he has given so many players -- often with tremendous results (Troy Smith, for one). I think he's deserved that.

My only caveat is this: if anything else major comes to light that further damages the university's standing with the NCAA, then I'd say the weight of too many infractions eliminates his opportunity to turn things around and get back on the right path.

Other than that, I want him back on the sidelines, coaching and teaching young men.

They absolutely do. When a team is forced to forfeit an entire season because of the coaches action, that coach gives the University cause.

Not in the eyes of anyone in authority at Ohio State.

Every coach in the country would be fired, they all lie, everyone in the world has lied......the difference, his was discovered.

How many lies have you told? How many times did you lie to your parents? How many of your lies have been discovered?

Forfeiting an entire season??? LOLOLOL That is meaningless. Every sports fan with half an intellect knows what the "Fab Five's" REAL record was. Taking down a banner or not allowing one to be put up is silliness.

Please supply a link that names someone of authority at Ohio State that thinks forfeiting games is a reason to fire Tressel.

Forfeiting an entire season is a fairly big deal. Yes, everyone knows the record, but everyone also sees the asterisk and the "1-12" that will be associated with the 2010 season. It's a major embarrassment, I cannot see how you do not understand that. It is asinine to think forfeiting games means nothing. For elite programs that like to brag about the number of wins, titles, etc., it certainly doesn't fucking help.

Also, why the hell would an Ohio State official who wants to keep his or her job say something like that?

Yeah, there's a big difference between a fan's perspective and the school's perspective. I couldn't care less if a team I like has their wins from ten years ago (or even last year) vacated. It doesn't erase the memories or the fun I had during whatever the run was.

Schools - Presidents, ADs, Coaches, etc. - have a much, much greater investment and accountability. Those types of things will ultimately reflect on them personally and professionally so in most cases, it just isn't going to fly. Look around and you'll see that not coaching gods aren't even safe when you start churning major violations and public embarrassment to the school. One recent example is Bobby Bowden - pretty much untouchable for 30 years, but the cheating scandal (did he even have anything to do with it) pretty much sealed his fate. Although the fallout took a bit, he didn't exactly retire on his own terms and that was more than just coincidence.

That's a ludicrous point of view, and indicative why OSU is the butt of jokes around the country. I can tell you how many times I lied in a professional setting. NONE! Because it isn't worth it, I'd be discredited, likely disbarred and my reputation would be shit - which is what Tressel's reputation is to anyone that doesn't root for OSU.

I respect what the guy has done, but these are MAJOR violations, or else he wouldn't be sitting out - how many coaches do you know keep their jobs after getting this type of punishment - self-inflicted or otherwise.

At this point, I think it's safe to say more think Tressel should be fired than those of the opposing standpoint. And that is really suprising to me, and even more surprising that Gee and Smith haven't made a move.

Worse yet, the sanctions won't come until much later than August. You'll probably have to hear about it most of the season.

I think the majority of these people are outside of the OSU circle (by that I mean students, alumni, ardent fans, etc.)...BUT, on the other hand, I believe there is a large contingent within this circle that would be okay with him resigning, because by doing so it would appear he's putting the reputation of the University ahead of his own....JMO.

You're lying right now. If there is a professional group as a whole who lies more than attorneys, prove it.

Two kept their job, six didn't. Those whose whole body of work was highly respected kept their job.

You left out players, who respect and love Tressel even more now than ever. How many players and recent recruits do you suppose would leave Ohio State if Tressel is fired?

Ohio State faces sanctions, Tressel is fired, many players transfer, recruits decommit, the best Ohio State could do for a new coach would be Rich Rod or worse.

The NCAA is not going to give the death penalty to Ohio State, but firing Tressel would be a self inflicted death penalty.

this is total bullshit. i know personally a player and his family that tressel promised a scholarship then reneged. and this was a kid with excellent grades. but it worked out for the best he went on to a better university got a degree and 2 superbowl rings. and i wonder how tressel was mentoring all these players that got arrested. he did a fine job with clarett and irizarry . tressel is for tressel , all he cares about is winning because that pays the bills. yea his histort is strong in that regard , just look at his history at YSU. tell me that was free of scandal.
