An ok pick to rebuild the program.
Once Michigan can get reestablished in a few years, they can move on.

Still better than RR.

I'm a huge OSU guy, and and a huge anti-UM guy, but I think this is a very good hire by UM. He's done well at 2 small schools with no budget, and is a good guy. As an OSU guy, I'd have loved them to get Miles. THEN the domination would have continued for 10 years. HE makes a bonehead coaching move neraly every game. Is as good as he is at LSU because they have great players.

I'd rather have RR back for 1 more year with a new D coordinator. This recruiting class is screwed. Denard is probably gone to, that might be for the best though since Gardner would most likely stay.

I'm actually okay with this. Hoke has done nothing but coach defense his entire career.

I really am all about this "Michigan Man" thing. Rich Rodriguez wasn't a Michigan Man, and look what happened. I'm not talking about W/L. I'm talking about the defense and understanding the program.

I really think that Hoke will do great because of those 2 things. Seriously, as long as we got a Michigan Man, I was going to be happy.

Like I said on the Offseason thread, I like this hire for 2 reasons.

1. He's a Michigan Guy
2. He has coached on the Defensive side of the ball his entire career.

Grade wise, right now, the program is a D, which is why I think Harbaugh and Miles turned it down. Too much to mess with right now.
Hoke can bring the program back to a B-, B in my view after a few years.

Then, the job looks more appealing to say Miles or Harbaugh and Michigan can look for that coach to take them to that A level.
I doubt Hoke is the guy to make Michigan Michigan again, but he can help build the foundation.

RR really screwed you guys over. Program is a mess right now.

That doesn't make sense. If Hoke can get the program back to where Carr was, they aren't going to get rid of him. Miles is almost 60, Harbaugh is an NFL guy at heart.

Hoke was the guy that most UM fans wanted to be the coach after Miles in another 5ish years. There won't be another Michigan guy out there and even if there was, if he can rebuild this then he will certainly be here for awhile.

I'm sure they could have gotten quite a few guys with better resumes. But they wanted a UM guy, which really hurts them because there aren't too many successful UM guys out there right now. Good luck, he'll need it. I'm sure being a defensive guy he'll be asking himself wtf he got himself into next year.

I'm going to miss all the "DickRod" posts on the OC.

That being said, Hoke surprised a lot of people by going to SD State after his time at Ball State. I think a couple years ago he was a guy on the rise and probably could have landed a much larger gig in the meantime. Maybe he was just biding his time in sunny San Diego until this job came open.

As noted previously, he is a Michigan Man. If I am not mistaken he was the DC when they want a share of the national title back in 97. His years at Michigan and at Ball State have provided him strong ties to high school coaches in the midwest. His time in California and the Michigan national brand will help him recruit out west. This is the key to the game when it is all said and done. I am sure Hoke will do just fine.

He's not really off base at all.

Hoke has a career record of 47-50. Take away 12 wins and 1 loss, that makes him 35-49. Which actually makes him 1 game more under .500, which isn't a significant difference; but CC didn't really say that. 14 games under .500 is bad.

Hoke has had a couple of nice seasons. This past season at San Diego State was even more impressive than that 1 loss season at Ball State IMO. I can't ever remember San Diego State being even marginally respectable and the conference is much more difficult to navigate than the MAC. So he has that going for him.

With that being said, I think Brandon really screwed the pooch by keeping Rich Rod until the bowl game. He missed out on the chance to entice others (Al Golden comes to mind) and they just flushed a lot of recruiting time down the drain. I just can't believe Michigan is once again settling for choice #3

I really don't understand all of this "Michigan Man" talk. Hoke is not a Michigan grad, and was merely an assistant several years ago. Do you consider Greg Robinson a Michigan Man now too? A few buddies of mine who are UM grads completely agree he's not much more of a Michigan Man than Rich Rod.

UM just set themselves up for 5-7 next year at best.

Hoke took over 2 horrible, horrible programs, and made them winners. The reason I said I cant 100% disagree (with what you said) is because his overall record is bad. But that's all you see, and it's superficial.

I think the program will suffer short term, but the hire will be good long term. I've said that about Hoke from the beginning.

I agree too. I guess if you have ties when they won, or were part of the Lloyd era, you are a Michigan Man.

that "Michigan Man" stuff was a joke. You shouldn't factor emotions and stuff like this into deciding who your next head coach will be. Hire the "best" guy for the job.

I think this Michigan Man stuff was largely responsible for the Rich Rod experience not working. Obviously the people spouting off about Michigan men can't play defense, but they never seemed to really embrace him or much less give him a chance.

I know a few players who were in Ann Arbor when Hoke was coaching, and they LOVE the hiring.

I'd take their opinions over those of some grads.
