Team USA is in the "sweet 16," and a lonshot to go all the way. I am admittedly new to this soccer fever thing, so I ask the experts: compare Team USA to a college hoops team. Are we a Butler, who has a chance to go the Championship game? Are we a Wisconsin, kindof vanilla, definitely a chance to go far but equally as likely to lose early? Or are we like a Tulsa, just sortof happy to be where we are?

This year? Of the teams mentioned Id say Butler. We have a great shot at the final four. But thats mostly due to the draw. If the draw played out differently wed be slightly better than Tulsa, but not quite a Wisconsin.

More like a Cornell this year. Have never really been a juggernaut, not the most exciting team on Earth, not the best either, not many people are paying attention compared to the others, but the team is definitely solid, can beat good teams, and can make it to the middle rounds of the tournament. But there's no way they win the thing.

I say Tennessee.

Tennessee got a break playing Ohio in the second round, so they had a decent path to the Elite 8 and didn't have to face Kansas or Georgetown or whoever the 2 seed was, I can't remember.

Tennessee proved throughout the year they could beat top competition, much like the USMNT proved they could as well (Spain).

UMNT also put up a great effort against Brazil before blowing it.

I like this comparison the best so far. A team that has the talent to beat anyone, but is wildly inconsistent in many aspects (ironically, defense here). Ended up with a favorable draw avoiding the big boys that they could have met.

I'll say Duke because we're going the entire fucking way, even if nobody wants to believe it :)

Scratch my last post. This is the best and most accurate comparison I have seen so far.

Ewwww... if we're Duke then I'm off the bandwagon... I want nothing to do with them!

Just kidding. GO USA!

hoops I had to read it 3 times to make sure you actually said it.

I love the Duke comparison also for another reason because like Duke everyone else hates us cause they ain't us.

Nah, FIFA would have to deliberately move Brazil, Chile, and any other good teams to the other side of the bracket for us to be like Duke :)

I agree with Tennessee, have the ability to beat anyone, also the ability to lose to pretty much anyone.

^^^agree with above...

1. we have the potential to go further than we have in the past, due to the talent on the field; but the cards have to fall just right, and the stars have to align.............
2. we have also benefitted from some good luck in the draws...and clinching the #1 out of group was HUGE...................just look at what England is up against as the #2 out of group.
