I walked past the emotional family of a 6 year old boy we just coded for over an hour on my way out of the hospital, including his twin brother. That was hard. He started having his first flu symptoms on Monday and now he’s on lung bypass with heart failure. 

Damn

One of the things I keep thinking about is when I was in one of those "shithole" countries and saw 2 kids, around 7 to 8 yrs kld, who came up to me.  They hung around for awhile and then climbed under the truck  to pick up a discarded Apple core.   They wiped off the sand and dirt, broke it in half and then ate 

Just broke my heart seeing kids that hungry they would eat that.

Currently: one of my students developed a rare bone cancer last year in 3rd grade. She obviously lost all her hair, left school, basically lived in hospital and every time we did see her or pics....she was smiling, never stopped smiling. Though she was going to at least lose her leg.....16 months later she is now back at school most every day, not long before she’ll be off crutches and her hair is now growing back...and still has that great smile. Gets me about every day.

 

That sounds like it's going to end much better than i thought when I started reading.  :)

I have a friend who adopted her daughter from a family member with drug problems. The little girl had a shitty start to life but it seemed like things were looking up. When she turned 16 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. They operated on the tumor  once and she lost her hearing, speech and the ability to swallow,  but they didn't get all of the tumor. They could have had a second operation but there was no guarantee what might happen to her so they decided to do chemo and hope. I think she is in remission for now but the tumor is still there.

Had a 35yo woman die in cath lab the other night. Her mother (who didn't look that old, probably in her 50's) sat in the waiting room with the patients 9, 5, and 3 year old children. Never saw a husband/father figure so who knows about that. 

How the hell do you try and explain that to a five year old? Or any of them? Probably my biggest fear in life.
