It is.  The founders foresaw this possibility.  The 17th amendment ended this check. 

I haven't been paying attention because I could give a shit, but what's going on in PA and GA? I know Dr Oz (moron) is running in PA and that's about it.

How much you wanna bet if the Dems pick-up a few Senate seats and keep the House, they're going to stack the SCOTUS?  Rather than, you know, actually pass a bill legalizing abortion.

Hopefully it's all just election pandering rhetoric, but they're kind of setting it up so that "we have to do these things to protect Democracy from MAGA".  Or, in other words, "we have to be fascist to save you from semi-fascism".

Seems the R policy is to do their best to throw easily winnable races by sending out utter clowns for the sole reason that they kissed up to Trump at the right time to get his support. Got a super-prog like Warnock in Georgia of all places, send out a barely articulate former NFLer who has a full laundry load of red flags. Got a dude coming off a stroke in Pennsylvania, send out a quack TV doctor whose idea of a "gotcha" post is to ramble about how much it costs to serve crudite. Basically turned Ohio from a battleground state to a fairly red one, send out a dude who wrote a book and did a 180 on his opinion of Trump the second he realized that not liking him was going to make him an afterthought to a cranky boomer (Gibbons) and a creepy looking guy whose entire platform was "You remember I served in the military, don't you!?!?" (Mandel).

It's all gotten to the point where I don't even know what anyone's endgame is. Is it a race to see which side can have more unqualified morons holding office? Because as self-defeating (and, well, just defeating to everyone else) as that is, it makes more sense than anything else looking at a lot of these fucks.

It's been a problem for a long time, but seems even more pronounced now.  Moderates don't turn out well in primaries, and so you have the far left or far right "base" giving everyone else a choice of nutjobs.

Also, the 4th Estate is dead.  Our media has done an excellent job of making politics a spectator sport, where no matter how badly your team sucks you'll be a homer and keep rooting.

Repeal the 17th or Idiocracy is inevitable.

Really I just want the Repubs to take the House because I'm looking forward to all the investigations!
