Ivy Leagues have been wading into far left territory for some time now. So it makes sense that they want a "celebrity" with cameras involved. Admissions obviously doesn't care if you're qualified and ready, they just want ideological preferences reflected.
Harvard cares mostly about what sort of influence you might have - future political leaders and business titans, mainly, is what they're looking for. Hogg has the potential to become a leading millenial activist, and then who knows what that grows into.
I don't agree with it, but Harvard hugely overweights leadership and experience relative to grades and test scores. And like 2/3 of the class is legacy, anyway, which means that remaining 1/3 tend to check very unique boxes to get in.
