Hank Greenberg? Don’t think he has enough Hrs cause of the war. But he led the league in Hrs like 5x, which is the reasoning.

Frank Thomas? Murray and Thomas both just cleared 500 HR, so has to be close...

Vladdy? Did he get close enough to 500 to be by Murray?

Yaz? Doubt he got 40 five times, but he did a few.

Duke Snider? Crazy power streak in the 50s, but relatively low number.

Last 2 guesses are Eddie Mathews and Ernie Banks.

Going with Lou Gehrig. I think he just missed 500. Can't think of any else to be just below Murray.

Gehrig actually tied with Fred McGriff

Question #4

The great Walter Johnson held the career strikeout record from 1922 (when he passed Cy Young) to late April 1983, then he was passed again in May 1983....then passed again 2 months later! He was in first place for 60+ years and then in 4 months he was 4th all-time. (Stay with me here).....Going into 1980 1 of these guys had 3141 career K, another one of these guys had 2909 and the 3rd guy had 2685 career strikeouts....the guy with 3141 after 1979 NEVER was the all-time leader, both guys behind him beat him to surpassing Johnson....the guy with 2909 got to pass Johnson first, but the 3rd guy at 2685 not only passed Johnson that year but passed the first guy to pass him....at the end of 1983 the guy with 2685 after 1979 was now the all-time strikeout leader and would remain so until late 1985.....when the first guy to pass Johnson also went back passed him.

Name the 3 HOFers that passed Walter Johnson in 1983

I’m guessing Nolan Ryan is out given those parameters.

I'm guessing Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, and Gaylord Perry.

Seaver feels like a slam dunk.  I feel like Perry might have been the one to be right behind Johnson to end up being the third one to surpass him, as I believe his performance went into the shitter the last few years of his career (particularly because I'm sure they were watching him for spitters).

Carlton was just my subjective opinion on the best of the rest of the ones I knew were at the end of their career around that time.

My first guess was Steve Carlton (and I only know this from when he was an Indian) and then Gaylord Perry. I don’t know the 3rd one.

edit: wait I change a guess to Bert Blyleven instead of Gaylord. I don’t think Gaylord, although great, was not in the SO.

Nolan was the 2nd guy who had 2909 and got passed in 1983 after he passed Johnson....regained it in 1985 and never looked back

Carlton was the guy who rallied from 2685 and struck out over 270 2 straight years and passed Ryan and Johnson in 1983....held it until 1985

Gaylord Perry was the one who after 1979 looked like he was going to be the one to catch Johnson first but he was 39 and dwindled as expected.
