What's your favorite hobby and how did you get started with it?

From the AI thread, I'm going to be using ChatGPT to post at least a new thread every day. This seemed like a good place to start.

My wife accuses me of having hobby ADD because I tend to pick up new ones for a while and then abandon them. Woodworking (bought a ton of tools but never had the proper spot for a workshop ended up selling most), home brewing (have spent a ton on equipment over the years, and have brewed a lot, but haven't in a couple years), etc.

My record collection is definitely my most active hobby. It's been going pretty strong for a couple years now and I really see no reason I'd ever stop collecting or sell my current collection unless things got really bad for us. It mostly started after my father-in-law gave me a stack of his old albums. I had a few albums I had bought at Amoeba Records in SF back in 2013 but never bought a record player. I think my wife told her mom and I ended up getting one of those little Crosley briefcase turntables for Christmas. Then a few years later he found his old records and let me pick thru and take any that I wanted. Then I got a new turntable, and then it spiraled into what it is now. I don't have an exact count but I'm sure I'm pushing 650-700 albums at this point. I have over 500 cataloged on Discogs, and I'm certain I have at least a 100 unaccounted for, likely more.

It's golf and Smoking food. I golf religiously every friday, try to get out more often as time permits but my friday game is fixed on the calendar. I love to smoke something every week also. but since i've been apartment living during this move i've not been able to in the last 3 months, with the exception of 4 pork butts for easter dinner with the families. Once we get moved into the new house i'm planning to have a small party and smoke a few chickens and some veggies and what not.

I would say golfing and camping are my next biggest. Camping is definitely my favorite activity, but I don't do it as often as I would like. Golf is very love-hate for me.

Snowboarding. I started late, age 21. I went 2-3 times as a teen and sucked bad. My parents were not into winter sports at all when I was growing up and it's expensive, so it was never a thing.

When I was 21 I was working as a valet at OSU and making great money. My close friend group went to an annual ski trip every year and I was always jealous. One year I said fuck it, bought an entire snowboard setup without really knowing how to do it. I taught myself at Mad River Mountain over one winter and that was that.

My sister eventually moved to Avon, Co after she graduated college so I always had a place to go. Real mountains. It was glorious. My BIL also grew up boarding and he's amazing so I immediately started to better by going with him and his crew. I've been going regularly ever since. I've been to lot of places on the East Coast, but nothing compares to out west.

Camping and roadtripping are a close 2nd, but I've been doing that off and on my whole life. Now that I have a capable vehicle I've been getting more and more into "overlanding", but nothing too crazy or remote...yet.

I am 100% convinced I would kill myself on skis or a snowboard.

Skiing is easier to have success and less bad falls. Snowboarding....be prepared to hit the ground and pick yourself up over and over. It's a bitch to learn later in life. I always recommend skiing if someone starting later. I also never took a lesson, YUGE mistake.

Don’t really have any big hobbies. I do dabble in smoking meats, and also bought a Blackstone recently.

Had a boat but sold it. I’d like to get into fishing and/or golf, but kids take up too much time for that right now (plus I sucked at golf when I would play years ago).

kids definitely eat up my weekends and evenings. But friday afternoons are wide open so i golf. I fish a lot with my daughter (she's very into it) but it's not my favorite thing, i just do it because she loves to do it. I want to try fly fishing with her but haven't bit that bullet yet because my fear is that i'll love it and it'll consume my free time now. or that she'll hate it.

One childhood hobby that I'm getting back into: building scale models. I've got about 10 cars/trucks, a tank, a military plane, and an Apache helicopter ready to put together. A few are already started but I working on building a dedicated workbench area so I can keep things I'm building out at all times instead of putting everything back in the box every time I work on them.

Since my retirement, I’ve become an avid bird watcher, with feeding stations right outside my back doors.

Also, my wife and I like to drive around and look at stuff.

I am 100% going to get into bird watching in the future. Seems like a good hobby to pickup when I turn 50, so I've got 10 years.

Started snowboarding in middle school or maybe freshman year? BRUTAL. My ass was so fucking bruised. Aches everywhere. Took me 4 days (2 long weekends) and I was good. Could go years without falling (unintentionally). I havent been in a few years, but I didnt go in college and then went when I graduated so had been 4 years. Picked it right back up after a quick trek down a double circle.

My main hobby is sports memorabilia. No real groupings or anything, just a bunch of random shit. I have a Barcelona signed jersey from when I ran into the team in Chicago. LeBron James signed Jersey. Those would be my top 2.

I have all my credentials from various sporting events over the years, give or take a few. Probably at least 1k. I plan on one day making an entire wall out of them.

One of my other hobbies is showing the libs here (Gblock and ?) how dumb their side is. And trying to show the other dummies who say “well if trump is running I’ll vote dem” how dumb that is as if that’s anywhere near a similar option. Oh and how everyone should hate anything past the LGB alphabet board.

I’m very aware that I have nothing better to do.

Not sure if it’s a hobby, but I LOVE movies and routinely do deep dives on actors, writers, directors. Listen to a bunch podcasts. Dissect cinematography (my favorite part) and acting.

Love television, but less passion as it doesn’t lend itself to studying as much.

Yep, that’s a hobby.

My hobby is watching sports and breaking them down.

Used to be golf, used to be baseball cards……I grew up driving all around and listening to music, still love doing it and listening to old countdowns

I guess my current hobby is sitting in the hot tub with a beverage and watching the Reds

Weightlifting.  I train 3 times per week.  My purpose is to maintain and hopefully grow my strength (I’m 52).  But I am very passionate about it because I think it has many other benefits such as improved mental state.  I document in detail every workout (reps and sets) and carefully plan before future sessions.  I like watching progress on the bar, even if it’s only a pound or two.  I like how measurable it is.  I also like to put on music and escape into my own world while doing it.
