When I took my driving test WAY back in 1976, I had to turn left from a 2 lane road into a 4 lane road (traffic light controlled). The instructor deducted 5 points because I turned directly into the right lane. He said the law was for me to turn into the closest (left) lane. I don't know if that law has changed over the years or not, but it's one I always remember since he told me I was wrong.
Hell, that was so long ago we had to parallel park (instead of the cones).
