Salary Cut!

You’re employer cuts your salary 20%....and you can’t add any jobs or get a new job. What cuts do you make in your living style/budget?

For me it would be tightening of the strings a bit. Little less eating out, wife a little less online shopping. Probably explore cheaper ways of viewing tv. A little more efficient with the utilities.

It would suck but it would be ok.

Reduce what I put in 401k, drink even cheaper vodka and no beer, eat out less, pay the minimum of our mortgage instead of extra. Would cancel cable and just use roku apps. I think we'd still be able to live comfortably. Would put off buying a new car for the wife for further than our next 5 year plan.

We could handle this pretty easily. We're both putting a lot of money into retirement, plus regular savings. We could trim those a tad and make up the rest in our monthly discretionary income.

I'd move back to Ohio and increase my standard of living.

Could you do your current job from Ohio?

Yeah, I work from home & travel to destinations in the US quite a bit. Could totally do that from Ohio.

We could do it.  A little belt tightening, a little less in savings.

Would hit savings for me...have to push off retirement a few more years.

Otherwise, the only real significant cuts most people can easily make is housing and cars.  Someone making $80k, a 20% cut is going to work out to @ $12k after tax.  I'm guessing most people are on the very margin of what housing/cars their salary can afford (even if they're still saving a decent bit).....many, many people are "house poor".

Internet cancel,    bye bye cable, more home cooking and less pointless driving.

Trim my phone's data plan by a couple gigs.

Dispose of cable, since I can just hit up friends for stuff I really want to watch, or listen to online radio for sports events at home.

Cut down on eating out and ordering pizza and shit.

Get cheaper with my vices.

Wouldn't be difficult to do, but it would be annoying and less convenient to the point I'd think the best solution would be to find the corporate fuck who imposed this salary cut and fuck his/her life up.

I had to take a 10% pay cut about 8 years ago and they also stopped 401k match. It's a really bad sign when your employer starts cutting pay. I hung on for a few more years but was eventually laid off. If i ever have to take a pay cut again, I'm out the door as soon as possible .

I had an edit to my original one, but apparently it didn't go through.

It was against the OP's rules to get a new job, but we seriously couldn't live if I or my wife got a 20% paycut. We are already scraping by with childcare costs, mortgage, and student loans. We cut a lot of fat -- no internet, tv, or social spending (literally have went out to eat 1-2 times this year). The only other thing we could cut is our gym membership, but that's going to give us back like $360 or so.

In the next 5 years, we'll have some costs drastically cut. No more student loan debt. No more ridiculous childcare costs, but that will be "different" as they'll all be in school. So, we could maybe have some money to set aside for other things.

If my job cut my wage 20% wouldnt hurt me to bad. I would just pick up more sidework to make up the difference.
