Just got off the phone with my buddy who is still there and he said basically that as the crowd grew bigger it became impossible for everyone to stay on the sidewalk and instead of closing the street the cops started macing anyone not on the sidewalk.. he said the horses were going up and down the sidewalk so really there was nowhere to go. He said both sides then started doing dumb shit.. protesters throwing water bottles and cops throwing tear gas bombs in the middle of crowds where people already couldn’t move. He said he got maced trying to help someone who already got maced. He was happy to be maced orob cause although he is white he has been very active in these type of issues
posted by geeblockEvery single person I know and everyone who is associated with groups like BLM are extremely upset that this is happening because it is used to discredit the real issue in this country. The real protesters yesterday in Columbus were out from 12-10pm.. the people out at night were rioters not protesters. There are so many people of all colors out there with so many different agendas from those who hate police, to those who just want to see things burn and even thieves. I went out today and walked with the March for 2 hours and it was completely peaceful and inspiring. I have been really upset about this the last week or so because I had my own bad experiences with traffic stops for no reason. This really filled my soul today seeing so many people show up. It was sooo many white people from so many backgrounds standing together with us. There have been a lot of these type of incidents and protests before but to me this one seems different. Hopefully some change will come
I've read that the governor and a few other notable officials in Minnesota seem pretty convinced that the rioters and people escalating the situation tend to be out-of-state people coming in to start trouble. Including the St. Paul mayor stating that about all the people that have been arrested by his department have been out-of-state. They seem to think it's white supremacists and drug cartels using the protests to sew chaos, while the Trump is yelling about it being Antifa.

but it’s also hard to know if this is real or fake. Who knows. I know there are plenty of black people who feel like no matter what type of protest they do it gets slammed so they are ready to destroy property but their are so many other groups and races looting and setting fires and BLM gets all the blame

There are a ton of videos on twitter of there being a ton of shitty white people doing a lot of the destruction. There are definitely Antifa there and a bunch of spoiled white kids wanting to get crazy. I have no doubt there are some white supremacists too but it isn’t like they dress in a particular way like the Antifa folk to be able to identify. I’d take anything the MN officials, who are covering their ass, with a grain of salt.

I’ve lost count of the number of videos of masked up white dudes with hammers casually smashing in windows with black onlookers trying to stop them.
It’s a shame that this ended like this today. When I left there I felt different than when I got there. I had a calmness that I hadn’t had in such a long time that everything is going to be alright. I had been carrying around a lot of anger since the TM killing and others. It was such a great feeling to just see so many different types of people come together. I feel bad for the little kids there that got maced. Lots of kids in strollers too, which on hindsight probably isn’t great parenting

I also wanted to add that my experience as an AA doesn’t necessarily speak for others.. I grew up pretty rurally and overall even tho we didn’t have tons of money I experienced a lot of privilege in my life going to all white schools , being half white and may not have been born on third base, easily second base. I’m sure others had it much worse
