I need a refresher on brunch topic...
I'm GenX, of course we don't use subtitles! I guess since they weren't a thing when we were growing up with our four channels, we never came to rely on them, in general.
Yes for subtitles for everything except sports. It's a game changer.
I am a subtitle person.

Legit question, how do you see the scene as intended if you are reading the whole time?

How are you able to stay on the road and read signs at the same time?

I don't need to pay attention to the roads detail? I also would crash my car in 2 minutes if I was reading a billboard that was consistently changing and I had to read it all, decipher the meaning.
TV and film constantly have stuff going on in the peripheral that you need to watch to get the full experience.

not necessarily. a lot of dialogue-driven content doesnt have much of anything going on.
And it's not like you're reading a book. It's a line or two. If you're a decent reader you can easily blast through it and still see what is going on.
I like them on and can easily switch back and forth from reading and listening to the speakers. I find myself picking up more subtle jokes and generally digesting content better when they're on vs off.
For live content I always turn them off. The delayed nature is just a distraction at that point

Well I guess my brain is just better.
I watched Dune this weekend, with subtitles. It was helpful.

Never thought about it. I guess able to multitask? Similar to eating my lunch and scrolling through Twitter lol
I often watch sports with subtitles on and the sound off and listen to music instead.

Sorry not sorry.

As a gen x'er who's hearing is shot, I rely on cc.
Exclusively watch with captioning. Too many shows and movies have louder special effects / soundtracks and softer speaking volume these days. I don’t know if my factory TV settings are whack, it’s a streaming setting, or their audio techs just calibrated things poorly, but I catch way more things with subtitles. Also helps immensely when accents are involved. I think I started using captions during GoT and never went back.
Also hate when the scene is too dark… you can make it apparent that it’s night time or a room is dark without making it impossible to see what is happening.
I watched the latest episode of Curb and still had caption on. I hated it and turned them back off.
Caption sucks
