Bc little kids need hands on, individual attention. So the parent would have to co-teach the entire time. And what about kids who don’t have any caregiver that can help? They just fall behind until in-person teaching can happen again and then fall back a grade or more?

No delivery method is going to fix shitty parents.

And I’ll add, when my brother taught hs at bad schools in SC and Canton, he could barely get them to do their work showing up to school. Should we just give up on kids not self motivated?

Just say u need day care man

No shit, but a 6 year old can’t teach themselves on a screen. Hence why there are teachers, in person. Obv good parents help their children excel outside of the classroom. But for some that’s all they get.

I have a 2 year old, daycare is open, and no spreads have been linked to any across the country. It isn’t my kids that are going to be fucked with computer teaching. It’s the already less fortunate. It literally doesn’t effect me at all, but if you’re cool with not giving a fuck about those kids then that’s cool with me. From the way you talk on here I figured you’d be one to care.

I don’t think distance learning works for anyone under the high school level, definitely not elementary. And what are working parents supposed to do?

I put this in the actual school thread a few days ago, but it bothers me a lot that governments at every level fucked this up so badly, and now teachers are being asked to risk their health and the health of their loved ones because parents need to go back to work. No, I do not have a solution. Doesn't make me less mad. I'm also angry at selfish assholes who wouldn't stay home at the beginning, and who refuse to wear masks now.

The less fortunate are much more likely to catch the disease. We know nothing about the long term impact of the disease. It would be a tragedy to give kids lifelong lung issues because we were too impatient to wait for better medical advances in terms of testing, treatment, and prevention.

And furthermore if we start up with a plan and have to shut down these will be the first ones overlooked. I would rather start with a plan that includes and focuses on these students. These are exactly who I teach. The money we spend to half open a school would be better spent providing resources to these students.

Like I said, this should be a thread, but how do you plan on that? And to make sure they’re engaged?

Lol I do care. It’s what I do for a living. I’m just laughing cause u spend half a thread and can’t say black lives matter and now I’m supposed to think you are concerned. They are already way behind and in trouble if school opens or not. That being said I hope school is able to open.

If my local walmart can have 4000 people a day visit.....we surely can have a few hundred kids attend school.

Bumped it. Use that thread for school specific discussion from now on.

I care about the kids who didn’t ask for the hand they were dealt.

I think I've mentioned this before.  But we've spent $3T in stimulus packages so far.  If that saved 1 million lives, that's $3M each.  If, according to some research, you saved an average of 11 years than that's about $270k per year.

And let's not pretend like governments and people don't put a price on life every day (while pretending to claim all life is priceless).

At the bar tonight and the bar tender said there are rumors floating around that another full shutdown is on the way. I really hope she misheard that.

Heard the same about the full shutdown

Should put an end to a good percentage of the businesses that survived the first tyranny
