I thought this was an interesting discussion in the Christmas movies thread. I'm not a big fan of Chevy, partly due to his actual personality (he's apparently a real dickhead) and partly due to not finding him incredibly funny in anything. I think he's fine in Christmas Vacation and Caddyshack, but just meh overall.

I put Very Funny, just to spite you. I actually only think he is somewhat funny. But, in Caddyshack and the Vacation movies, I think he is great.

I voted for kinda funny. I don't hate him but I don't think he is all that. I put Murray,Candy and Williams way ahead of him as people who were popular in the same time frame.

I've noted your sarcasm and will keep it in mind when I think of starting future threads.

The guy sounds like a complete jackass.  I read an interview with him last year where he basically embraced being a jerk toward his fellow performers and in his personal life.  I think part of his problem is that he thinks he way more talented than he actually is.  He should have embraced being a straight man in the midst of world-class comedy actors.  He would have been fine that way.  Thinking he can go toe to toe with Dangerfield, Ted Knight, Bill Murray, Randy Quaid...hell even Charles Grodin is way funnier.  Here's an example.  In the original vacation when they are buying the family Truckster at the beginning, the car salesman is actually the star of the scene.  Chase almost fowls the scene up by opening his mouth.  Just an example.

I’ve read he is an asshole because he envisioned his career being like Akroyd when Dan got better roles. Then got jealous of Murray being a hit with the younger crowd as he aged (as well as getting more roles and being better actor). That’s why he took the gig on Community — to try and get “in” with the younger generation like Bill Murray.

Chevy Chase SNL is the goat. That original cast from the first few years was truly something amazing, so much talent.

mid-90's comes pretty close, arguably surpasses it - Sandler, Farley, David Spade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and Mike Myers.  Not sure if they all overlapped, but it's close.

Except Chase was the unfunny one in the bunch.  Gerald Ford falling down and "I'm Chevy Chase and you're not" is about all he had.

Love Chevy.  I could watch Fletch, Fletch Lives and Funny Farm again and still laugh at him.

I don't know if any of you have watched Fletch lately, but that movie has not aged well at all.

I just mean that Fletch isn't that funny anymore. Some comedies age better.  For example, Animal House or Caddyshack.
