Chances are your ancesters waltzed right in the same way that most all of the tens of millions of Eurpean immigrants did in the 19th century - no process, no testing, no waiting, nothing.  They came to get away from a situation that was not what they wanted.  Now when people today do the same thing, we see them as doing it the wrong way because they won't do all of the years long things now required.  I wonder how many of our relatives would have been able to stay here if they had to do what is necessary today?  Another gift from BIG government, huh?

The difference today is the poeple coming here are coming to take advantage of a welfare state, send their $ back to their country and not assimilate while they are at it.

There are so many people that come here for the exact same reason your ancestors did - to provide a better life for their families.  In many cases, they had to experience significant trials just to make it to the US.  They work hard and contribute to our society in both labor and in the taxes they pay.  Assimilation happens too.  Good thing you weren't around when first generation Italians or Germans spoke their native languages while here.
