Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball.
If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.
This is much better than the old system, not perfect, but much better.

yeah, how does a safey come into play? the team what wins the toss gets sacked in the endzone. is that game over? and if you lose an onside kick, does that count as 1 possession if the team that kicked off and got the onside kick gets 3pts?

I love the idea imo.
Kickers in the NFL have range usually and it only take a play or two on offense to win the game. I'd much rather have both teams get a crack at it unless their is a TD scored first.

^^well it does say first team to at least six. what I am asking tho is what happens if a team is up 3-0, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3, 4-0 @ the end of OT. Do they get the win or do they just keep playing.
U know..I answered my own question..if this is playoffs then it would keep going until someone got six or more
man im a dipshit.
I still think its BS only in the playoffs. So you can beat a team in the regular season by a 3-0 score but come playoffs the rules change.
Stupid. Dont get me wrong..I want change in OT. Dont like this change but at least put it in both regular season.

From the sounds of it, the game would be over in both situations. On the safety, the spirit of the rule is intact because both teams had opportunities to score. Same with the onside kick. You have to protect the ball to win.Glory Days wrote: yeah, how does a safey come into play? the team what wins the toss gets sacked in the endzone. is that game over? and if you lose an onside kick, does that count as 1 possession if the team that kicked off and got the onside kick gets 3pts?
Think of the rule this way, it is sudden death except if the team winning the toss kicks a field goal in their first possession. Then the receiving team has one possession to either tie the game to continue OT or score a TD to win.

They have a chance in May to revisit the situation to bring it into the regular season.

yeah the safety isnt too hard. but for onside kicks, the kicking team technically has the possession correct? if they get the ball on the kick, do they ever really lose possession?BCBulldog wrote:From the sounds of it, the game would be over in both situations. If they are making the rule change they should have done it for both the regular season and playoffs. I don't like the fact that it is different. Plus if they would have done it during the regular season they could see how it works and fine tune it if there is a problem, they can get it fixed before the playoffs.

They may technically have the posession, but as soon as the ball is kicked and goes 10 yards, it is a free ball, so posession can easily change. Plus, factor in the field position that the receiving team would have if the kicking team fails to recover and you can see how this helps protect the competative balance.Glory Days wrote:yeah the safety isnt too hard. but for onside kicks, the kicking team technically has the possession correct? if they get the ball on the kick, do they ever really lose possession?BCBulldog wrote:From the sounds of it, the game would be over in both situations. I'd rather just see a 10 or 15 min OT, but this is better. Will be cool to see how coaches decide to take the ball or defense.

Why would the NFL want to implement the worst playoff system next to soccer?Keebler wrote: They should do the same thing as college.

The Vikings were one of four teams to vote against the rule change. yet it was their game that caused this overhaul of the system.
i think they should make a rule change that if a team kicks a game winning field goal on the last play of regulation, and that team has more possessions that the losing team. the losing team should get one more possession to make it fair.

wait, i got an even better rule. lets make it like baseball. lets eliminate the game clock during regulation and give each team 10 possessions. that is fair right?
