I remember laying in bed watching sportscenter that night in 1990 went they broke into the LMU/Portland game and Hank Gathers had just collapsed at mid court only to pass away a short time later. LMU would go on a run to the NCAA elite eight after that including destroying defending champs Michigan in the 2nd rd in the highest scoring NCAA Tourny game ever. LMU lost to UNLV in the elite eight. Bo Kimble hit the one handed, left handed free throw in the 1st rd game to honor Hank. Can't believe it has been 20 years!

I remember that night as well. I thought the tribute his teammates payed him by going on the tournament tear like they did was an incredible response to the loss of such a young and talented life.

Time passes by so fast. I remember those Loyal Mariemount teams used to put up over 100 pts a game. Here is a picture of Bo Kimble shooting with his left hand in honor of Hank Gathers:

I believe Kimble shot left handed the whole tournament run in honor of Hank. That team was fun to watch. With Gathers I wonder if they could of made it any further?

That was a helluva team, Gathers (prior to his tragic death), Kimble, Jeff Fryer, Per Stumer, Terrell Lowery, Tom (The Human Bruise) Peabody.

I felt old when this came on this morning. I think I was in 8th grade in 90 and clearly remember watching sportscenter that night. I remember perhaps for the first time in my life crying over someone I actually didn't know it really got to me. As they were talking about it this morning and playing the videos I felt myself choking up again!

With Gathers they still hit into UNLV in the regional championship......UNLV steam rolled through the championship game destroying Duke by 20 or 30 points.

I remember that season and it was teary to watch Kimble shoot those left handed free throws....and well. Facing last year's Champ Michigan in the 2nd round and scoring 149 points........and winning by 35.....priceless.

Bo Kimble seemed like he scored 35 a game after Gather's death...loved him.

Can't believe it has been 20 years. My first year in college. Two events from sports I remember from that time period. Hank Gathers and Loyola's NCAA run and Columbus' own Buster Douglas shocking the world and beating Mike Tyson.

I can't believe it has been 20 years either. I too got choked up again today seeing video of that game as I did the day it happened. That team was fun to watch. You could have had a ten second shot clock and they would have never come close to it. I love defense in football, but in Basketball I really liked seeing a team like LMU.
