You know, I've noticed oatmeal stouts catching in popularity lately. I've been enjoying them for quite some time, and I'm happy to see it catching on.

Try to find a breakfast stout. THOSE are fantastic.

Highly recommend Founders Breakfast Stout. Should still be on the shelves, but it's a seasonal beer so it won't be around much longer.

went to a sam adams beer tasting over the summer at the lazy chameleon....it was a great time and a good deal. it was fifteen bucks and you got to try 7 types of beer that each came with a small appetizer.

Yeah, the cherry-ness comes through but I don't think it's too sweet or tart or anything. It's generally a pretty consistent beer, if I'm out looking for a belgian, don't know what to get, the Three Phils is a mainstay.

The second one I posted you probably can't get in Ohio (I think it only reaches Pennsylvania now) but it's way sweeter.

Make sure you go to the Publick House the next time you're in Beantown, they have one hell of a belgian selection:

Try any Trappist Rochefort or St. Bernardus beers if you like belgians.

It's in Brookline, not really all that much farther from Quincy than the North End. You could drive there in about the same amount of time, or if you're taking public transportation it's out on the Green Line about 15-20 minutes from downtown.

P.S. I prefer Modern to Mike's ... funny that you head to the North End all the time, I live up there on North St, a block away from Hanover. Nice neighborhood, bitch to park.

I love oatmeal. I eat it more than any other food in the morning. I don't know if I would appreciate it in a stout.

I'll have to give this a try.

Actually, Samuel Smith's was my least favorite oatmeal stout. Having said that, it's also cheaper, and by "least favorite," I mean it's still pretty darn good.

I have to admit I've not tried the latter. However, I'm a big fan of the Three Philosophers.

A personal favorite of mine:

Red Sky At Night, from Heavy Seas' Pyrate Fleet:

Terrific Belgian Saison.

Clipper City Brewing, if I'm not mistaken? Great stuff. I really enjoy their Uber Pils (Small Craft Warning)

Correct, gorocks. This kid knows his good beer. :D

Regarding, SCW, that's the other one I really like from them.

I must say, however, that I was disappointed with their imperial stout (Peg Leg). Other than that, though, they're solid.

O-trap what do you think about Sam Smith's Nut brown ale??? That too is a fav. of mine. I'm actually really on a wheat beer kick right now. Any suggestions??

What do I think of it?

It's not terrible. Samuel Smith's is generally going to give you a half-way decent beer at a good price.

Best brown ale I've had was Moose Drool.

My problem is I've got to really search for different brews. Their isn't a good store around me with a good diverse selection. I've got to drive 35 minutes or more to find a store with a half ass selection!! :)
