Overall, which way do you lean - best available player, or positional need?

I think it depends on how bad you are..if you need a lot of positions..you go for the best available..if you're only bad in a couple positions..obviously you go for those needed positions.

I should've added one more option:
"Fuck it, I'm Al Davis and that guy can run fast."

Agree with GoChiefs if you're a team like the Rams, you take best Available, if your a team like the Patriots, or Steelers you take a certain position of weakness.

I think teams generally get too carried away with specific needs.
If you think about it, it's rare that a team has everything. Even the teams that are in the playoffs and contending can usually fill a few weak areas.
I'd go more for value.

The Patriots don't need many positions, and they still always go BPA, which is just one of many reasons why they were the best team in the league this last decade.
You take the best guy available. If you have two guys that are even, you incorporate need with that, and take a guy that will fill the need or provide you with the best chance to win.
The Browns are an example of a team who's strictly drafted based on need and not BPA. Look how well their first round picks have turned out.

BPA....if it works out that it's an area of major need, that much more the better. The only exception is if the BPA is a QB and you already have Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, etc on your roster. Then, if possible, trade down if there's not a person you're really high on after the QB in question.

Ya should have a balance when you decide this.
For a team like the steelers, or others who are just missin a part or two, I look for that position player. But I dont reach for him. If I need a safety and by the time you pick the best at that position are gone and feel you can get one you want a lil later then you pick the BPA. What drives me nuts i when a team will draft soley based on a position and draft a guy most believe would be there a round or few later.

This is basically what I feel. There should be a balance.thavoice wrote: Ya should have a balance when you decide this.
