Why does college jump 2 kilometers for the men for the postseason? Has it always been that way? I ran my first 10k at the regional meet and it is a much different race than an 8k.

The women jump 1 kilometer, but there are multiple 6k regular season meets for them to get used to the distance. There are, however, no regular season 10k meets.

What do you think about it?

I agree ccrunner. Division III does not run the 10K in cross country, just the 8K even at the national meet. To me that makes more sense then running the 10K in the post-season after running the 8K all year long.

What I don't understand is why the women run a different length course then the men in college, but the same length in high school. Why not compromise and all run a 7K, sure would make setting up a course easier.

BTW give how did you do at your regional meet? I take it you were not thrilled with the 10K!

I think I did pretty well. I ran a 34:09 at IU's course. Coach told me to go out hard...I did, lol. 4:55 first mile. 10:10 2 mile. 16:15 5k. 2nd 5k was 17:54 lol. 127th out of 206. Beat high school state champs Donny Roys and Jarrod Eick for first time.

Nice job give!! So did you like the 10K or would you prefer to stick with the 8K in the post-season?

The 10k was a neat experience. It has taken a lot more out of me than an 8k though. I'm still feeling very sore. The longer the distance the better I am, but it doesn't make sense to run a 10k when everyone has been running an 8k all year. It is a different race. In professional sports the regular season games are 60 minutes, 48 minutes, and 9 innings, just like the post-season.

I asked my coach and she has no idea why they do it.

Is there much of a difference in training styles for an 8k or 10k? I would not think there would be.

Should runners approach a 10k race the same as an 8k? I would say take a cautious approach. Go out slightly slower the first mile, but from there run it like an 8k. Going out fast worked out for me, but one race is not a good way to judge something off of.

Yeah, maybe, maybe not. I finished well ahead of where I finished at MAC. At MAC I got like 60th. Buffalo was the only MAC team not to run the regional meet and I got 33rd at the Regional meet among MAC schools. It would have been the same as running back to back 17:04s...no telling whether I woulda ran faster if I went out slower, but if I had to run it again I would probably go out a little slower.

This is interesting, the conversation of college race strategy compared to high school. I've watched a bunch of vids of pre-nat's at Terre Haute, you can really notice the differences of strategy. You see a lot more surging and changing pace in college then you do in high school.
Give, your first 5k tells me more then your second. How many times did you run low 16's last year in high school? Only one year later to run a low 16 5k, with another 5k left is legit.
I would not think you would have too much of a difference in training? Maybe a little longer repeats and a slightly longer long run?
