I agree... the readers must have a thing against Triway, and it's curious that all the reader love went to Bates, someone that didn't show up in the staff teams. Also interesting is there are no Orrville players. With the great basketball history and tradition at Orrville I find that surprising.

Orrville basketball had a bad decade, at least comparatively. No regional appearances and a lot of zero or one win tournaments. A lot of forgettable teams and efforts.

Tim Hiller & Brandon Short were the only 2 players that you could make a case for. But who do you remove from the top 10?

No one, but it helps put the bad decade they have had into more persepective.

I think there may have been some bias in the reader voting.

Obviously more readers who voted are fans of the WCAL. That is why I said in my original post that it was accurate by the DR staff. No, Onebuckeye, I don't believe there was any anti-Triway biased, I think it was a combination of fans not getting to see them play and the fact that Smithville went deeper in the play-off more recently.

Smthville has had a great run the past couple of years and I congratulate them on that. IMO they need to string a few more years of consistant winning and going deep into the playoffs to be considered one of the elite programs in the area.

I think it is pretty clear one partiuclar player in the fan voting had a campaign manager and a good one at that lol. The writers did a good job of setting thing straight

someone's family was really concerned about getting a certain player of the decade IMO.....

I wasn't "the campaign manager" but I actually voted for Tyler, along with Linc, Danny, Kenny, and Tim.

I don't think Tyler was the best scorer at all but to call him a disgrace to the other players is mean. From looking at the nominations, Tyler was the only player to average 17ppg 6 rpg and 6 apg for a season in the entire decade.....While doing so for the top ranked team in the state and getting a lot of the defenses' attention (along with Kenny obviously). I actually think that Danny Peters was the best player myself, but some people are mean.

It shouldn't be a big deal if somebody's family and friends and teammates vote for him, because everyone had the opportunity to. I think that every person's list can be argued. I'll take Bolyard over Brenneman any day. I would even take many players over Frank and Garrison.

The Triway team wouldn't have beaten Smithville or last year's Hiland team in my opinion either.

This isn't going to turn in to another "Hate on Bates" thread is it?

I guess this is what can happen when you leave it up to fan polling. Didn't NBA fans just vote Allen Iverson as a starter for the East? It should be taken with a grain of salt.

Bates had a great career.

Kornowski or Rottman (Linc) would be my pick for POTD. The POTD chosen/receiving the most votes, had to move away from a school (that had ony a couple players mentioned on the entire list....aka. Orrville) to get playing time.
Bates was a decent player at best...wow I wonder who all got to hear the "campaign manager's" descriptive plea to vote for his candidate!!!!

I bet it is hanging on the fridge at home, already laminated, and a party has been thrown.

The sports writers were right on I thought...Triway (either runner-up team) was the best team(s) of the decade!!!

I really like Tyler Bates. He's a good friend of mine, and I think he was a really good player. But Player of the Decade? No, he wasn't.

As much as it hurts to say it I have to agree with Pitman and go with triway and Rottman as the POD, bates not even close. Who's hands would you rather see the ball in in the last minute Rottman or Bates. Was it really more turnovers than points in his last game?

And I'll 3rd that vote. Rottman was the best player on the best team in the last decade.

Triway should've been the Team of the Decade. But I'll still take Danny Peters with the ball in the last minute over anyone else.

They were the Team of the Decade on all 3 of the sports writers' lists, at least. There's no question, in my mind. Not only looking at it from an "accomplishments" standpoint, here is how the teams would have matched up.

Kornowski would have gone up against 6'10" Weber (playing college basketball).
Caldwell would have gone up against Jock Rottman (playing college basketball).
Bates would have gone up against Linc Rottman (Player of the Decade).
Beau Carpenter would have gone up against Jeff McCartney (playing college basketball).
And Frizell would have gone up against Senior Jamie Breneman!

And our bench was deep and big. Smithville was, what, 5-deep? Not to mention, our team had the experience of playing at the highest level having made it to the state championship the year before. Now, had Orr played for Smithville that year, they would have been a better team and probably won state... and the Team of the Decade debate would be a little closer, IMO.

I digress. I'm not putting down Smithville one bit, because they were a great team!! I just agree with all the sports writers that Triway was the Team of the Decade. Both teams were very fun to watch, though, and congratulations to both of them with all they accomplished!

that triway team was awesome. and has a hiland backer I don't think there's any way last year's Hiland team beats them. had they not run into a future Big Ten and NBA player at Dunbar theylikely would have been state champs at least one year
