I know he is one of the best goalies of all time...but why is 38 year old Marty Broduer the starter for team Canada? In the country that invented the game, the best goal tender is 38 years old?

The answer to your second question is no, he's not the best right now, and when Babcock puts in Luongo instead it'll make a difference. Marty is getting his time b/c he's the big name and arguably the GOAT at his position. Unfortunately, GOAT does not equal GORN (greatest of right now).

4 goals on 22 shots...

There is no denying how good he was, but team Canada can't go without a medal in these olympics. Time for a change.

I, for one, hope Babcock loses his mind and keep Brodeur in net. Regardless, Canada is going to have to get past Russia in the quarterfinals and regardless of who's in net, it will be a tough task. They lose that one (and I'd say there's probably a 30-40% chance they do) and there will be riots.

With Broduer in net they lose to Russia, no doubt in my mind.

I think Melrose just said Luongo is going to be the starter for the next game (and in theory moving forward).

Until last night, really no reason to take Brodeur out of the lineup. He got beat a couple of deflections which he had no chance at so it wasn't that he played terrible but unlike Miller, he didn't make the big stops when they needed him to. Might as well give Luongo a shot against Germany (which should be a win for Canada) and see how he does.

So you are telling me that the BEST goal tender in CANADA is a 38 year old?

Maybe he is or was. Can't judge one of the best goalies ever on one game. He didn't play well yesterday but he played fine in the first 2 games. In tournaments like this, coaches will generally go with experience and leadership which Brodeur has plenty of. If you gave me the choice going into the Olympics, I would certainly start with Brodeur but now things have changed so give Luongo or Fleury a shot at it and see if they can lead the team. I'm not going to question any coach that would put Brodeur between the pipes in a big game.

Too bad Brodeur never looks that bad when he plays the Pens!

I hope he keeps Brodeur in for the whole Olympic tournament. These extras games have to wear down on a 38-year-old's body come NHL playoff time. Considering the Pens record against the Devils this year, they need any advantage they can get.

I believe that Marty benefits from a defensive system (Lemaire). Lou will do pretty good against Russia, when they play them.

Look at the stats for both goalies:

Brodeur: 57 starts. 34-20-3, with a 2.32 GAA and a .915 save%.

Luongo: 51 starts. 31-17-2, with a 2.35 GAA and a .919 save%.

Looking at these numbers, I don't see how anyone can be baffled that Brodeur played last night. They're both really good. Brodeur got victimized by a couple deflections, and got beat by a guy who was standing on his head. I still think he's pretty good.

Not doubt that Marty is a great goalie, he just got outplayed and made bad decisions.

I almost have to go with Luongo. Deflections...hell..that happens all the time. Didnt broduer give up 6 goals in his two games?

Plus, I believe Luongo plays in Vancouver. Might be a little more comfortable I know that may sound stupid but it is possible. Ya always feel a lil more comfortable in your own arena. You re used to the time zone, your used to all the surroundings....and he played well in his start from what I gather.

Gotta go with Luongo.

but then again..woudlnt put it past Broduer to go trhough the rest of the tourney and stand on his head and lead canada to gold.

Luongo has already been named starter against Germany. As long as he doesn't let in 3+, he'll be their guy the rest of the way.

^^^^^Unless he gets hurt and MAF might get to play.
