This is so stupid. I'm convinced that, besides politicians, school administrators have the least amount of common sense in this country. What kind of stupid does an adult have to be to think arresting a 12 year old girl for writing on a freaking desk is a good idea? I smell a huge lawsuit, and I hope the girl's family takes NYC to the cleaners.

Here's the lesson: don't write on the friggin' desk! I'm so sick of everyone worried about kid's little feelings. Did they go overboard? Of course, but, how do we know if that girl hasn't been in trouble 100 times or something? Just another case of media hype. In the end, don't write on the dang desk. That's right, teach the little shits a lesson they'll never forget. I say we go for public flogging. Late for school? Write on a desk? Didn't do homework? Thats the problem with kids today. They dont have enough punishment, b/c we MAY hurt their little FEELINGS!!! Screw that. Maybe kids would be more respectful of each other and elders, if there was more punishment. Instead we use timeouts and send them to their rooms. What does that teach? If I do wrong, I get to go play with my toys in my room.

Not in my house, you break rules or disrespect, you get your ass smacked. Thats how I was raised. Thats how my kids will be raised.

I know I hinted at this earlier, but I feel like there's some meeting in the middle between detention....and arrest. I mean, there are definitely some things in between those two levels of punishment, unless times have changed that much.

Nothing the school could do will instill any discipline or respect. That's from the families. If the parents don't give a rat's ass, the kids aren't either.

The issue is that schools have become spineless to discipline the kids because of fear of backlash from the parents. And mostly, because what the school can do is only idle threats that aren't taken seriously by the students.

im pretty sure a suitable punishment would involve cleaning the desks for the room or for the wing of the school. not arresting, not handcuffing, not beating, not whipping. some of you shouldnt be allowed around children

Schools are limited to detentions, in school suspensions, saturday school and out of school suspensions. I have watched parents come in and throw fits over the cleaning idea! lol I worked lunch duty at a middle school for my first 6 years of teaching, and if they accidently spilled something they could have the janitor clean it, however if they were throwing food or whatever I made them clean it with a broom or washrag. I had a parent come after me the next day after I had little Johnny clean up some peas he had thrown. The parents complained that the washrag was soaked in a cleaning solution and would hurt little Johnnies skin! The principal tried to calm them down, but they went over his head to the Super who also supported me, but after a trip to the board no one had to clean up after themselves.

This principal went over board IMO, but schools are handcuffed in what punishments they can give.
