Does anyone have experience with 3D scanning technology where a scan of an object or space (say inside a factory) can be taken translated into a scalable CAD model? Any knowledge of companies that perform this service?

I ask this because the company I work for is looking to maybe utilize something like this on future projects.

Interesting idea. Even if the CAD import is possible, how do you expect to pull that off when a scan, almost by definition, would be 2d? I don't know how they do 3d films, but seems like your typical camera wouldn't work for this task.

What you're looking for if I understand is: reverse engineering and dimensional analysis.; Reverse engineering consists of; taking an existing part and reproducing it's surface geometry in a three dimensional (3D) data file in a computer aided design (CAD) system.

There are the firms that take Pro-E or Auto Cad Modeling drawing data and can create a protopye plactic part for testing issue...

Please explain what your trying to achieve? Are you wanting to take a photo inside a building of a space and produce a drawing file of the area? Or are you wanting to take a photo of a object and product a data drawing file of that one object. How big is the object to be scanned photographics?

You can alway takea photo of any object and get scale if you know one set lenght within the photo.

Consultant to HP and Apple for the development of CAD computers, plotters and software.
And that is only one area of my wealth of knowledge……. We will not go into explosives

That's basically what I do for the General Contractor that I work for... I also do occassional moonlighting (cheap)

BlueJayRay you'll creating a 3D Auto CAD or Pro-E modeling CAD DWG file. What Nashley25 want is the reversial of that and take digitial scanned 3D imgage and created a CAD Scale drawing from that image to create a CAD file.

I enter the data in an object oriented drafting program, then export to 3D autoCAD as required.

Many Architectual firms, Custom home builder, Developer and others in the related business of the construction market are always looking for skills like this to sud-out work.

Can you do "walk-throughts" presentations?

I'm in the Dayton Area, and yes, I can do walk-throughs, although they are a series a 1 degree move stills strung together that can be a little herky-jerky. I also do "Roof-off" orbitals, which actually show much more detail, and a "Glass house" option that makes every surface translucent, so you can see right through walls.
