I think I got a nasty one this time. Avast caught this Vista Antivirus 2010, but it downloaded somehow anyway. I've tried to combat it with help online, but it's progressed now to anything I click on, including system restore, can't find the program associated with it. I cant run avast ore malware bytes or anything. I'm on my desktop right now.

I can't find the link, but to get this off of my brother's computer it involved booting the computer in Safe Mode with Networking for the programs like MalwareBytes to run.

Found it: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-antivirus-live

anytime I click on anything, even in safe mode, it tells me to select the program associated with this and only Internet Explorer shows up.

Had something pop up on that page too, said I needed to download something, I didn't. If you did, then check recent downloads, go to add/remove and remove it.

Don't put it back into your safe computer. Most of the time the anti-virus viruses will transfer through the thumb drive.

I'd try running things through a command prompt.

Download Hijack This and try to run the program: http://download.cnet.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?tag=mncol

Go to geekpolice.net and create an account and explain your problem. They will tell you how to get rid of it.

Incredibly, I've caught very few viruses in my computing days. Currently running Comodo (firewall and AV), Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware. I also have Malwarebytes and occasionally run MS Defender, but neither ever finds anything.

Do the following:

1. run rkill.com (if you can) http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/rkill.com
2. run Combofix (if you can) http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
3. run malwarebyes (if you can) http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button
Yep, this is the fix. This virus was pretty nasty on the old huddle and really caused my computer some serious problems. I'm really hoping you didn't get it on freehuddle.

A lot of people that come through our office say they were on Facebook at the time it happened. I have a feeling these get through via an unpatched system flaw.

But a lot of those people usually have Limewire on their computer as well.

And a lot of those people are stupid.
