Is Hughes one of the most underrated writer in film history? You don't often hear him with the greats, but the man knew how to make hits.

Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, European Vacation, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes Trains and Automobiles, Christmas Vacation, Home Alone

There aren't many writers with a more impressive resume. I think he captured us with the teenage comedies that remain classics today, but movies like Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles are three huge hits by themselves.

Aside from Breakfast Club, Uncle Buck is probably my 2nd favorite movie of his. He is definitely up there he came up with some shit for sure.

I'd put him at the top for no other reason than the whole black-and-white gangster film from "Home Alone" was actually created specifically for part of the movie.

Yeah I didn't know that until I googled the movie to see if it was real.

I heard somewhere that Hughes actually just sat down and wrote these movies in 1-2 weeks.

Makes all those hits even more amazing.

I graduated from high school in 1984. So he was kind of the cinematic voice of our time period.

I hear people say that but I find it somewhat strange. I don't believe those movies were all that realistic. I mean they contained every cliche character possible.

Did people identify with it more because that's how they wished high school was?
