Pretty clever idea, actually.

Getting buried vertically will save a buttload of space in cemeteries. They're eventually going to run out of space to bury people so this would help delay that.

I'm going to have them make burgers out of me and feed me to cows. Poetic justice for them, plus it takes up no space, except for when they shit me out.

I guess then people would be justified when they call me a "piece of shit".

If people would just get rid of the whole casket and embalming thing, we wouldn't have this problem.

I think, but I am not sure, that a saket and vault are neccessary because the soil is so soft in the US that bodies would wash up in a heavy rain. Not sure how accurate that is, but it was explained to me that way awhile ago.

In certain places maybe, but I doubt it's like that everywhere. I know funerals are supposed to be about the living remembering the dead, but it's just another huge money maker for the business that they get out of people even in death.

Wooden casket for me. Bury me in the woods somewhere. Maybe a kid will dig up my bones in 50 years and be all "holy shit, a dead guy".

I can agree with that. Especially your last sentence.

I wonder what these giant "coffin screws" are to be manufactured of...
also...I can't imagine two people being able to install one as is shown in the picture...heck, I have a hard time just digging post-holes in this hard-pan clay.
On the other hand, it adds a new touch to the graveside service...

If I ever start my own death metal band, this thread title will be the name of my first album!

Without the question mark.

I've already told my family that it's a sky burial for me. Build a platform, throw my body up there, and let the birds feast. When everything's been picked clean and the bones are bleached, go ahead and stick them in a box.

They do something similar to this with Buddhist monks at the monasteries in east Asia. To give you an example of how revered the body is, plenty of mourners are put off by the fact that the monks carry on conversations with each other while carrying out the rituals.
