Just picked up a new TV and PS3 today. HDMI cables arrive Thursday. I want to hook this bad boy up, but I know I need some type of protection for it, but I don't know what to get. I know general information about surge protectors, but I've just been introduced to the UPS units (Uninterruptible Power Supply). The UPS units are significantly more expensive than the average surge protector. Are they worth it?

I want to be able to plug in my TV, PS3, receiver (when I get one), and the cable box. Yes I know this is not an Audio/Visual board, but hey...I like you guys/gals! :)

UPS' are nice in that you can go shut the equipment off manually when you lose power, but I'd hardly think a UPS is worth it for home electronics.

I've got a Big Flat Screen, Cable Box/DVR Recorder, and PS3 hooked up to a Surge Protector. I haven't had any problems with it as of yet.. Knock on wood. You defenitley need one that's for sure.

I agree with this. A UPS is usually so you can properly shut down your computer without losing data

Exactly..
Your tv losing power isn't any different than turning it off. A surge protector will more than suffice.

^^after reading up on the UPS it did sound more like useful with a computer. Glad, because I was hoping I didn't have to drop that kinda coin on a system like that.

Any recommendations as to what protector to get? Brandwise I mean. I don't wanna go cheap, but I don't wanna get raped by purchasing Monster Cable components either.

I like the Powersquid surge protectors so I can plug in all my shit without the plugs getting in the way of each other.

Stay away from Monster....Tripp Lite is a quality protector and that is a hell of a deal on it. I paid 120.
Thanks for the tip. I don't particularly care for Monster products anyway. They are overpriced, and honestly they have some of the worst business ethics I've ever seen in a copy. It's one company that I would love to see go down in flames lol.

The above protector is $69, hopefully it stays at that price for the rest of the week. I may pick this one up.

Only thing "electronic" I don't plug into a surge protector or UPS is alarm clocks. I have a UPS for my computer. Would never drop that kind of money on one for my TV and game systems.

All hooked up!

Well temporarily...just plugged up the TV to make sure everything was Kosher, PS3 is online. PSN is RaiderBuck784 if anyone wants to add me. I only have NBA 2k10 right now (which I totally suck at), but will be getting CODMW2 soon.
