I've just discovered torrent files. Can you download onto a CD? What's anybody know about this?

you need a client. after you download the torrent file, you have to open it up using a torrent client to download the actual data. i have a mac and use transmission, and love it.

if you download files that have a low amount of seeders then yes you can get viruses. ive been using torrents for a while and never have had a problem.
i use bittorrent as my client. just downloaded a few cd's last night.

Get the utorrent client, it's the most popular and lightweight client (program to download torrents) plus it's free.
What's great about torrents is many of them have comments. This is useful as the comments are usually along the lines of "Great torrent, quality is good, clean" or "Stay away! Fake torrent tries to get you to download a video player".

I use Transmission for Mac as my client and get my torrents from Demonoid.

I second Demonoid, I think they're actually letting the public sign up right now too. Only problem is it might disappear at any moment like it did for a while there.

if you have a mac, as long as you aren't downloading any software, then you don't have to worry about a virus. you can only get a virus by installing it yourself, so if you stick to music videos and such, you will be fine. on pc's, you do have to be a little more careful with which torrents you download.

so...you need one program to download them, and another to open them up?

well, I do it like this....
I find the files on Isohunt.
I click on them and they automatically start downloading using Bitlord.
I then either transfer them over to my HDTV Media player hard drive or open and watch them with VLC media player(there are others, but this one will open almost any file).
All of these are free of charge...other than my HDTV media player.

you don't need any program to download them, just a site such as demonoid.com, isohunt.com, etc. then you do need a program to actually open it up and download the real file.

Downloading torrents is not.....so as long as it isn't copyrighted material, it is legal.
Honestly, most people(including me) are stealing copyrighted material.

A torrent is just an way in which to transmit the data (rather than bit by bit, you can get different pieces of the file at different times from different seeds).
Isohunt is the best site for searching for torrents. You then use a torrent program to download it (I use utorrent). The torrent will appear on your computer as a folder with files inside of it (isohunt will show you what files will be contained inside the torrent). The files are just like any other file. Most video files (if you're downloading videos, they're divx files, which will require a divx player--WMP, Real Player, etc can't play them, download the divx player).
Now, if the torrent is a DVD with the r0(x) filetypes, they'd have to be burnt onto a DVD to view them. I don't mess with those torrents, I prefer the ones that just have a .avi divx file.

Not really. I don't know how other Torrent sites are set up, but on Pirate Bay, there are comments and number of total users sharing a file. The files with the most users are usually safe. Plus you can read the comments before you download.jordo212000 wrote: Aren't torrent websites kind of known for giving you viruses?
As for the legality, the douches at the RIAA aren't going after downloaders anymore. They are going after the people sharing music and movies.

Download the program Bittorrent...just google that, it's free and safe. And then go to isohunt.com to search for your music, movies, whatever. They will come up and download in the bittorrent program.
****IMPORTANT****
Make sure you use firefox to download them with, if you use internet explorer there is a good chance you will get a virus.
To get the files once they are downloaded, right click the torrent and go to "open containing folder" from there you can drag them into whatever program you use, such as itunes..
Hope this helps!!
