Huge Stephen King fan. I've knocked out It, Desperation, Dolores Claiborne, The Plant, and Just After Sunset since Christmas. I am currently reading Cell. Some of Michael Crichton's stuff is good too.

Of those, I went with Stephen King. His non-horror work is very good (I'm thinking of the Green Mile).

Although he just passed away, I'm a huge fan of Michael Crichton. I have also read a majority of John Grisham's books.

Hunter S. Thompson is my favorite. There are too many good ones though. I'd also add:

Bob Woodward
Noam Chomsky
Dan Brown
Khaled Hosseini
Tom Rob Smith (only wrote two books but I loved them both)
Max Brooks

Out of that list I like Stephen King the most, I am about to start reading Under the Dome. John Grisham has a lot of really good books, but his last few have been pretty bad.

A few others i like: James Patterson, Michael Connelly, Harlen Coben, Tess Gerritson, Ted Dekkar

Of those listed, I went with Dan Brown.

I'm also a fan of Chuck Palahniuk. Author of books like Fight Club and Choke.
