So I realized I made an error in filing my school district taxes last year by using the State inome taxes amount versus the Local income taxes amount, which made me get back quite a bit back from the school district. Obviously an honest mistake and just realized it tonight while doing my taxes for 2009.
What should I do about it ? I have not been contacted by anyone as of last year even. It should seem apparent that I have never gotten a refund of that large amount before.
Help!

Most likely they will do a corrected version and send it to you, that's what happened to me.

If you don't mind paying back the money with interest some day let it go. They may never catch it and then again they may. How honest of a person are you. If it were me I would do what is right and file an ammended return. Pay it back now and not pay a penalty if caught. That's what you should do. I guess you must have started this thread to get idea's on why you shouldn't correct it. Pretty obvious to me what the answer should be but will it?

I didn't read it that way at all. I think they just want honest advice on how to fix it.just_a_swimmer wrote: If you don't mind paying back the money with interest some day let it go. I may be wrong, but I'm going to give the OP the benefit of the doubt here. I didn't really know you could file an amended return, so if this happened I don't know what I would do to fix it either.just_a_swimmer wrote:If it were me I would do what is right and file an ammended return. Whats so ironic about it, as I am going thru my filings for last year I have a notice sent to me from the Tax Dept. " School District Tax Refund Notice Variance" where they re-calculated and actually refunded me an additional $70 or so dollars. I guess my concern would be that if they notice that this year and in previous years I have never had a refund so high you would think that would throw up a flag (or could it fall thru the cracks)
Thoughts?
Thoughts?

What is a School District Tax refund and how do you get one? I have never heard of it.

You have to live in a school district that takes the tax out.Skyhook79 wrote: What is a School District Tax refund and how do you get one? I have never heard of it.

I would file an amended return. Get the SD-100 form for 2009 and put in all the correct numbers. Write across the top "Amended Return". Make a copy of last years to send in also. Write across the top, "As Originally Filed." Be sure to sign the new return. Send them a check for the difference. Write a brief statement on what happened and send it all in.
