2009 stats for returning players not sure if this will format very well. The players are listed in order of placement in last years all league voting. Some others that may have been over looked were added at the botom.

Thanks for the numbers. Looks like players from Calvert received the most votes. Do you think these numbers are an indication of who has the best shot at the title (Calvert will be on top), or do you think that it depends on other factors? I've heard from others that it may be a 4 team race between Calvert, SE, Hopewell, & SJCC. Your predictions?

I see the teams in groups of three. The top three are SE, SJCC, and Mohawk. SE is the deepest team in the league with solid talent in each class down to eighth grade. SE did lose a lot of their top players to graduation last year, but the JV has depth to fill in. The question I have about SE is do they have deep enough pitching for those multiple playing days in a row. SJCC has five solid starting pitchers. They also have nine strong offensive players, but they lack quality depth beyond their top nine. Mohawk’s Huffman will be one of the best players in the league. But it takes more than one player to make a baseball team.

The next group of three are HL, Calvert, and NR. HL really took a hit to graduation. Yost and Brown were a huge one two punch pitching and offensively. There is just no one there that can replace those two. To add to HL’s problem is the lack of depth. They have no returning juniors. Calvert has Philips returning and he finished hitting over 500 last year. Calvert’s problem will be pitching. I see NR’s stock on the rise. They may have depth problems and starting pitching issues, but they have solid incoming freshman that may have an impact on varsity.

I do not see the rest of the teams having enough pitching to push for a league title. However, baseball can be too close to call and anyone can win on any given day.

I don't know much about Lakota. Wonder where they will be in the mix.

Mohawk is going to be a team that could drop from the top three. Huffman’s pitching may out right win the game for them. But he can’t pitch every day. They may have a .500 record overall, but push near the top in the league standings because Huffman will pitch against the better MAL teams. I may have underestimated Calvert. They have solid offensive numbers but I question their defense and pitching. If they have improved in those areas, then they can go right to the top.

Hopewell Loudon’s numbers seem to be down this year. Their website only shows 19 players with no juniors or freshman. I know last year they did not have any sophomores so the listing of no juniors looks correct. I do not know if the listing of no freshman is just an oversight. I do know the freshman baseball players were near the bottom of the Seneca County League last year. HL is a well coached team, so you can never count them out.

Carey, Lakota, North Baltimore, and St. Wendy should be grouped together after the top six I listed in the post above. Lakota did not fair well last year against the MAL as I remember. They may have been saving their better pitching for the SLL, so those games may not be a good gauge for how they will finish. Carey really improved from 2008 to 2009. However, Carey has a big problem with numbers and did not field a JV team the last two years.

New Riegel has the same problem with numbers. If all NR’s guys are back, there will only be 13 returning sophomores, juniors and seniors. I know the freshman are good and should have good numbers, but their influence may not be felt for a year or two on the varsity field.

A lot of talk elsewhere about who will have the best pitching in the MAL this year. Most agree with you in that Huffman should be the dominant pitcher in the league with a lot of questions and debate after that. Some are saying that the league as a whole will have weak pitching. I would disagree with this thought. I believe that there is enough talent in the younger grades to get the job done, even though they will be green. Thoughts?
