I have a broken clavicle in 3 places. A nice 9.71mm gap between the bones and a piece of bone that is 2mm from poking through the skin. Of course it's my right shoulder and I'm right handed. It stinks typing and mousing with the left hand only.

I'm due to have reconstructive surgery on Thursday. Depending on how the surgery goes I may not be one here much over the next 2 week...or out of boredom be on here a lot.

Just wondering if anyone else out there has had this done...experiences...recovery time and the like.

Broke my left clavicle 30 years ago, did an endo on my MX bike in sixth gear. Being a lefty it really sucked, but I learned to do things with my evil right hand I never even tried with it before i.e. teethbrushing, eating, and attending to 'personal paperwork'. I can still throw a Frisbee with my righty quite well.
I didn't need surgery, but it seemed the healing process was agonizingly slow. Once in particular I thought I undid the healing that had taken place by trying to use it too soon and it hurt like a bitch. In time it healed just fine and I regained full strenth and use of it.
Be patient, let it heal before doing much. You'll be glad you did. good luck!

Thanks iref. I had the surgery 2 weeks ago and I'm going back to work tomorrow. Luckly my work isn't too physical and I convinced him after telling him I worked for the 3 days prior to the surgery, when it was destroyed and most painful. Plus I will have a contractor working for me on a project over the next few months, so I won't be alone at my job as usual.

The Surgeon ended up taking out part of the bone that was too destroyed to repair and was able to repair the part that was about to come through my skin. He also took out the ligaments and replaced them with a tendon from a cadaver...part of an achilles tendon (He joked that it was from a 'very strong' dead man). I will still be in a sling for the next 4 weeks, then more than likely physical therapy. (we'll see)

Best advice I can give you is to use the sling for the duration that it's recommended....there's no real need to rush it, and you're much more likely to do some serious damage.

The sling will be a must. I'm over 40 and don't heal as fast as I did years ago...and I'm wise enough now to know that. 10 years ago I'd be saying "F*ck it, ' Imma going for it" !
